On the bolded, I would think so, he had to listen to the final product and green light it for pressing.
damn near everybody showin love in this thread. Ain't too many r&b cats that have a loyal fanbase like this, I mean 14yrs gone and the 3rd cd comes out and the whole industry is all over it .
Co-sign on that, so damn soulful.
This right here, plus how many artist sound good LIVE as they do in the studio. I posted this before and you have appreciate it's just him and his piano, no effects, voice synths, etc.
For Black Messiah, when I heard Really Love I was like . Mostly due to it being released before in a rough stage, and on the final that intro they added... . Literally can not stop playing that, Prayer, Betray My Heart, Back in the Future, Another Life, The Charade...
this album makes up for Jason Derulo disgracing the genre all over the airwaves all yearOk finally digested this piff. This might be longwinded, but its been 14 years of wait for ya boy.
Album of the year!
Its hard to believe folks label Breezy and Trey Songz as "rnb music" while folks like D'Angelo is breathing
This is his "There is a riot going on". As others has said this is black superhero music. While so many "rnb artists" are running away from soul and trying to make Euro music mixed with emo-rap, Dangelo made a funk-soul album in fukkin 2014 sound relevant. Cats like Ant Hamilton, Bilal, and Saadiq still carry the torch admirably. They are excellent at what they do and i salute them brothers, but with all due respect they aint D'angelo. They are highly competent artist, but D'angelo is probably the most skilled solo soul/funk artist since Prince. No lie. Dude is that good.
I haven't even digested the layers of music on this joint. Im still soaking in the esoteric groove of it all. He is dropping some heat in some of the lyrics i have caught. He is offering encouragement to us as a people. He is doing what Marvin and Mayfield did, coaxing good vibes to a people in turmoil. I hear alot of Prince in this cd. George Clinton. A dash of Marvin, Donnie and Curtis. Sly Stone seems to be the biggest influence. And of course his own menacing yet vibrant falsetto dancing in and out of the thick layers of funk and multi layering harmonizing. You can tell he put his time off in this album.
The highlight of the album is "Another Life". That seems to be the consensus centerpiece on the album. Ive played this joint maybe 10 times this day alone. Its dizzying, beautiful, uplifting, and skillfully crafted. Its a modern day masterpiece brehs
But i love the entire album, its full of bangers. "The Charade" stands out. Questlove's drumming is cotdamn stellar. I hope this album makes cacs furious, and makes a impact on these fukkboy's chasing after this David Guetta bullshyt to act like they got some hair on they peaches and remember that black people used to set trends and have soul.
Dude literally gave us black superhero music. Not for marketing purposes or to move units or to say he did it. Literally to put the battery in our backs, put the fists up and to know, when push comes to shove, we can put a foot up that ass too.
shyt makes me want to fight. Makes me want to be great (how can you listen to this and not envy how great he is as an artist, not want it for yourself in whatever you do? It's not even about whether u get there. It's about wanting MORE.). Makes me want to raise kids and teach them what it means to survive and strive despite the struggle.
If he never drops another album he's one of the very greatest to ever do it. I'm just happy, so very happy that so many important points of my life intersect with dudes career. I literally have friends I haven't talked to in 10 years hitting me up to talk about this album. And reminisce about the last time dude collectively punched all our souls square in the face.
Can't even remember the last time the noise between my ears made me this fukking proud of who I am and what I've overcome.
Thank you.
My homie comin over the crib tomorrow. He wanna hear this D'angelo album. I'ma go pick up a nice bottle of wine and we gon' vibe to this together
