This is very "There's A Riot Going On," which is about the biggest complement I can give an album.

man, that's a reeeeeeeeeeeeally big compliment. sly was a damn innovator, especially with that album in particular. he changed the face of music with that album. that's the beginning of funk as we know it right there :mjcry:

i can see how people will say that because of the "vibe" it has. he said he'd been recordin' his music a lot like sly use to record

check the 1 hour mark of this interview he did some months back where he speaks on how he records (like sly)

Yeah not everyone knows how big of a compliment that is but on the first couple of spins this album is pretty phenomenal.

Obviously can't replicate the influence or importance of Riot, one of my favorite albums of all time, but this is so Riot that I can't help love it. The way this is mastered (that muddy but crisp feel), much of the tone, the mix of song types and themes, the pace of the album, so much of it is reminiscent of Riot.

Tell me you couldn't hear Ain't That Easy, Prayer or even Sugah Daddy on Riot. It's like getting part II to your favorite album. It's different enough not to be completely derivative, but I wouldn't be complaining if it was.

oh yeah, i definitely hear what you sayin'. the influence is definitely there. it's really amazin' how he pulled so any influences into the fold for this album. i hear sly, parliament funkadelic, hendrix, prince, j dilla and the list goes on. even though all of those influences are there, i still hear d'angelo. he doesn't get loss in the shuffle of those influences. he's one very talented artist.
