We heard "7 Minute Drill" which was generic "you suck, I'm better than you" rap battle bars so I seriously doubt Kendrick would've dropped anything in the ballpark of a "Meet The Grahams" as a response.
I will never understand Cole bowing out of the battle. Even if he was tipped off that it was about to get ugly with Drake. Which had nothing to do with him. And even if he was warned it could get equally ugly for him....that's what he signed up for by constantly talking about being the best.
He had to know he'd have to battle someone eventually and given rap's long history of super disrespectful disses ("No Vaseline" came out in 1991....it's about to be 2025)....it's not as if rap battles were on some "yes yes yall, to the beat yall" time prior to Drake vs Kendrick. He had to know popping sh*t would eventually lead to a battle, and all that comes with it.
Fred.
Port Antonio, J. Cole spoke in NUANCE of his reasons. But to sum it up, he never felt right dissing his homie. That night at the Dreamville Fest, he stated it was his dumbest mistake he has done and it took him off his mental due to peer pressure. And he checked himself and held himself accountable. What's unusual is him doing it publicly the way he did.
We're so so-called cultured in hip hop that we never seen something like this before. And I feel most of us were mad at the fact we didn't get such a battle between those two than even thinking or seeing these rappers are human beings with a close bond.
The BIGGER QUESTION is had this been an elite MC who dissed COLE and COLE NEVER had any close ties or a true falling out with that rapper, would he not only pull back his dis, but go even harder at that rapper?
