A war with China wouldn't be as simple/easy as folks think

Im skeptical of this. Nuclear India and nuclearchina hate each other's guts and have already had fights post nuclear armament.

India and Pakistan despise each other even more than China/America or China/India. And and they had an official war in 1999 right after Pakistan got nukes. Yet, restraint was shown despite the death of thousands of soldiers on both sides. And both countries got nukes specifically for genocide against the other country.

I'd imagine what we'd have instead of mutually assured destruction in a modern war against nuclear powers, is a gentleman's agreement similar to world war II where the countries involved agreed amongst themselves not to use copious amounts of chemical weapons like they used in world war I, because the great Powers at the time agreed to the horrors of the previous war. None of these countries ever destroyed those chemical weapons, but they kept them in the background just in case. We have a very similar gentleman's agreement in countries with biological weapons programs, of which there are dozens of such countries that could end life on earth with a virus .


In the most extreme case, I would postulate that the nuclear weapons would be used to prevent total warfare, and give a bare minimum standard of living after the war ends. And obviously as a countermeasure in case the other side starts with nukes immediately.

I think the case with China/America is just different. It’s two monsters who would go at it with everything to lose.

America has shown to have already set the precedent that they’d use it. So I don’t think any nuclear-capable Super Power would take the chance America doesn’t strike them with a nuke off the bat imo. The tensions are too high.

Especially with the threat of hypersonics from China both countries know the other side won’t play or would be much closer to using one than any previous other conflict. Then there’s the threat of the enemy disabling your nuclear capabilities and your reputation in the world is over. I think both economies have too much to lose in the world to not go nuclear and knock the other Super Power off.

Last edit: I think it depends on the type of war as well. If a battle should emerge out the blue I think you may see a skirmish out in the Pacific and the two sides talk it out and cool things down. However, it reaching a point where both sides are looking to take the sole spot in the world or going for all the marbles or they’re looking to enforce and restrict a major military position, they’d light each other up.

As hated as America is, it still has a few friends around the world..
China, has zero friends or allies in the world..North Korea and Russia don't count.

China also has too many people to feed, give water and provide warmth in a war where the water supplies have been shut off or polluted, food supplies cut off with most Chinese living in large cities.
A sustained and prolonged war would result in China surrendering sooner than you think.

Setting nukes aside I'm not so sure China would be as tough to take on. Not that I want any of this to happen but one thing I'll say about the U.S. military is it's constatly involved in battles, not exerecises actual battles. China's military for the most part is not really battle tested and that can be the difference maker if we are talking boots on the ground. There are other factors you have to think about though such as where the fight it is located like say Taiwan then logistics can be a huge advantage.

Edit I think China's biggest advantage is number of troops they could supply. Kind of like the Ukraine/Russia war where Russia just has way more people it can throw in the meat grinder to outlast the much smaller Ukraine.

The US got schooled in Vietnam Iraq and Afghanistan they didn’t win any of those wars

The only war the US “won” in recent history was world war 2 and they did it by nuking innocent civilians in two different cities

But boss man, invading a country is always tough, especially back in the day when combat was all "boots on the ground" and Idk alot of Nam, but Afghanistan's terrain is challenging as hell. I could be wrong but I don't think they've ever been conquered or colonized.

I think China is the boogeyman, and they know they can't match the US when it comes to brute military power. I know for damn sure the US can't invade China physically and vice versa.

The way you do it in today's world is through a proxy war or cyber warfare, which I think China has the upper hand seeing how Americans move.
