I still don't know what I think about how to keep Chriss. I do think McKinnie provides a necessary value, but is enough to keep him? This is a pretty good look at the options though:

Yahoo is now part of Verizon Media

Article: "SAN FRANCISCO — When Marquese Chriss was mulling over where to play this season, the Warriors offered him something more than the two-way contracts that made up most of his options. “They told me they would give me a fair shot to make the team,” Chriss said. “I think they’ve done that. They’ve put me in position to succeed.”

Impressed with Chriss in practice, coach Steve Kerr moved the 22-year-old big man into the starting lineup as the Warriors deal with preseason injuries to centers Willie Cauley-Stein and Kevon Looney. Chriss, as Kerr puts it, has been “the surprise of camp” and may be forcing the Warriors to find a way to keep him into the regular season. The Warriors like his ability to screen — they charted him with 13 screen assists last week against the Timberwolves — and passing ability, particularly when running the dribble handoff. Chriss has been an important part of the offense through the preseason.

“He has a great opportunity because we have guys hurt at that spot, and he’s making the most of it,” Kerr said. “He’s making a strong case for himself.”

Due to the sign-and-trade the brought D’Angelo Russell to San Francisco, the Warriors are facing a hard cap that makes keeping Chriss more challenging. To keep him will mean either cutting a familiar face, making a trade, or orchestrating something a little more complicated. Here are the options.

Waive Alfonzo McKinnie This is the fastest way from point A to point B. Not only is McKinnie the only player on the regular-season roster with a non-guaranteed contract, but he’s also done little this preseason to cement his position on the team. By waiving McKinnie before January, the Warriors could essentially take that money and redistribute it to Chriss. In two games, McKinnie has scored nine total points on 4-of-12 shooting (1-of-5 from 3). He does have 13 rebounds in those games, but his best skill may not be enough to keep his spot.

However, cutting McKinnie would come at the cost of even less depth at the wing positions. With Klay Thompson not expected back until at least the All-Star break, the Warriors may feel they have to keep as many bodies as possible.

Chriss could indeed start on opening night, but his minutes will get clipped once centers Cauley-Stein (foot) and Looney (hamstring) return from their respective injuries.

Make a trade

If the Warriors decide keeping Chriss wouldn’t be worth losing McKinnie, they could seek to trade a salary into another team’s cap space.

Doing so would free up money to sign Chriss under the hard cap, but would likely come at the cost of a future draft pick. The Warriors only have their 2022 and 2025 second-round picks available to trade. The other obstacle is the fact that players signed as free agents this offseason cannot be traded until Dec. 15. That means Cauley-Stein, Glen Robinson III and Alec Burks can’t be traded in time for the start of the season — when Chriss will be needed most.

On the list of players who can be traded: rookie Jordan Poole, 2018 first-round pick Jacob Evans and forward Omari Spellman.

The obvious candidate here is Spellman. Similar to waiving McKinnie, trading either Poole or Evans would eat into the team’s perimeter depth. Spellman, meanwhile, has so far been outplayed by Chriss in the preseason. However, only one team currently has enough cap space to absorb Spellman’s contract without giving anything back. That team is the Atlanta Hawks, who traded Spellman to the Warriors this summer. Even if they wanted to bring him back, rules dictate that the Hawks cannot re-acquire Spellman for a year after dealing him away. That leaves one last avenue.

The wink-wink

Chriss said he’s open to signing a two-way contract if it comes to it but, given how he’s played in the preseason, it’s possible another team could offer a regular roster spot if Golden State can’t. He likes playing on the Warriors. “They make it easy. All I have to do is set screens and try to get them the ball in open spots.” The Warriors front office may be able to leverage that to create a complicated route to being able to offer Chriss a roster spot.

Here’s how it would work: Sign Chriss to a two-way contract, providing him 45 days to spend with the Warriors (all other days must be spent with the team’s G-League affiliate). Of course, this would come at the cost of either Ky Bowman or Damion Lee. Allow Chriss to use up all 45 of his days, which would take him well past the Dec. 15 date when trade restrictions are lifted on free agent acquisitions. Trade Robinson III or Burks into cap space, attaching a future second-round pick if necessary, and sign Chriss to a regular roster spot.

It’s twisted, but it could work. However, by then, it’s unclear if the Warriors would have as much of a need for Chriss. Cauley-Stein and Looney could return by then, and the Warriors would be jumping through hoops to sign its third or fourth center on the depth chart.

While none of the options may be ideal, one of these could be better than starting the season without Chriss at center. "

Alfonzo is gone-zo

Chriss had 13 screen assists and was scoring, so if he keeps this up, we gotta keep him.
