Some notes I thought I’d add going into the draft and off-season
I think we need size. We also need a rim protector. GSW this season was the worst defensive team. That will help a little with Klay and Draymond coming back. But our big 3 are all on their 30s now. We can’t keep playing them like they are young players. So when they sit down, we need players that can hold it down, both offensively and defensively.
I don’t see why we don’t draft wiseman at this point. Dude is an athletic big man that can put a lid on the rim and run both ends of the floor.
steve Kerr usually likes his big men to be great passers like Zaza and Bogut. But I think we can teach wiseman to see the floor better and make the right passes. So with wiseman we get Size that we desperately need, and defense, that we desperately need.
ppl are talking about starting Marquese chriss, and that’s not gonna get us where we need to be. I like looney and chriss, but those 2 are best coming off the bench. We aren’t gonna win games if we constantly get out-rebounded. The Rockets were trying the small ball lineup and it worked for a few games. But after about 2 weeks they got beat by the knicks, run off the court by the clippers, blownout by the Orlando Magic, and nearly lost to the Timberwolves. Going small is a matchup based/closing lineup, not one u can use every game for 82 games. Again, our big 3 are all in their 30s now and all 3 are coming off injuries or haven’t been 100% healthy.
the clippers and Lakers and bucks are still showing us the Big Man is still needed. We’d be fools to think it isn’t
Assuming we get wiseman, we will need to use our trade assets to get wings that can defend the perimeter effectively. It’s a big “if”, but if Wiggins can stay solid on defense like he was for the 17 games he played, we are in better shape. I’ll also assume that Klay will have lost a step defensively coming off that ACL injury, but can still make it a little difficult for other guards when he’s on them.
that means we will have 3 starters who can defend the perimeter. We were the worst team defending the 3 this season, and we will continue to lose unless we can figure that out
I’d try and trade our assets for actual defensive wings this offseason. Idk who is available but I’m tired of seeing us use undersized small forwards. I’d like to see a SF/PF on our roster that is 6’8 or better. If we can do that, we will have a solid defensive core along the perimeter and on the inside.
next. We will have to see how well Poole and Paschall develop in training camp. Poole showed his ability to improve in terms of scoring towards the end of the season. Overall he averaged 8.8 a game even with his terrible shooting. Paschall was a great scorer but he was statistically our worst defender. I wanna see him improve his 3pt shot so he is a threat from distance, and I need him to be a better defender. He said he’s gonna work on his 3pt shot over the break so hopefully it goes well. Those are the 2 I’m looking at the most when it comes to improvement. A lot may end up riding on how much they develop coming into the season
That’s basically all I want to see
1. draft wiseman to get an athletic big that can defend the basket and also give us a defensive boost and size we so desperately need. Looney NEEDS to be healthy, no 2 ways about it. He will be great off the bench. Steve Kerr has him playing PF minutes even though he was good as a center. We also don’t need him taking more 3s. Looking at the Clippers, Zubac and Harrell never shoot threes and their team is excellent. Leave the 3pt shooting to those are actually serviceable
2. Improve defense. Mark Jackson instilled a defensive identity when he was coaching the warriors. Steve Kerr is gonna have to do the same thing. Recently, he said that this training camp is up to the players that want minutes. He said everything starts on the defensive end, which is encouraging. Our putrid defense won’t win us playoff games
3. try and get something out of the TPE, MLE, and 2 late round picks we got from trading Burks and GR3. If we can get wing depth, something we don’t have right now, preferably defensive wings, we can be cooking with gas. I have always believed that defense is harder than offense. If we can teach our team to play great team defense, we are in a better position than if they were all great offensively and were terrible defenders. We need to lockdown the perimeter and make it tough for other teams to get threes off. (Team defense needs to get better)
4. if we are gonna keep this group of young players, then we NEED to see them improve a lot over the next 7 months. Poole needs to play at the same level he played at once he left the G League (~14 pts a game efficiently) and Paschall really just needs to be a better passer (less iso ball and more movement.) I don’t think he will be the next draymond like people rammed down our throats. He can be a young Paul Millsap (good scorer but also a good defensive player). The other young players may end up traded if we are truly serious about contending. Honesty this roster isn’t gonna take us far with the backup units constructed as-is.
we aren’t in a position to draft duds or fail to develop players (Jordan bell. Mccaw, Evans, damian Jones etc). No more misses. If we use our draft picks, we need to hit the mark. Warriors FO has missed too much, and it can’t happen again
