It's not unusual news.
I guess I could run for mayor of Detroit. I don't have any experience. I have never lived in Michigan. The only time I was there was a one hour lay-over at the Detroit Metro airport.
For starters, I would have to run it like a one-man show and throw the city council in the bushes, no lie. They would just get in the way.
Then, I would restructure the main services of the city, fire, police, schools, utilities, road maintenance, etc. so that they can operate within the current budget.
Then, I would work on ways of attracting businesses and residents back into the city.
Then, I would re-zone a section of the city and try to draw interest in a new state prison or federal prison. Jobs would be brought in for construction and then jobs would be created for prison employees. It's kind of a dark way to bring in revenue. If that doesn't work, then I would create a prison where other states could transport prisonrs from their over-filled prisons to this new prison and those states would get charged for housing each prisoner.
Then, I would re-zone some residential areas into a new business zone to foreign auto makers to open up a plant in Detroit and domestic auto makers could relocate plants to Detroit. Crazy but tax-break incentives would draw them in.
I'm not saying I have all the answers, but improving the quality of life would be a big thing. Getting rid of corruption in the city government is the one main thing I would bring in as an outsider carpet-bagger.
