The horrendous road play continues. The Bulls played into overtime last night, had a delayed flight and completely outworked our guys (mainly the starters) tonight. KP had one of his worst performances of the season, Courtney Lee was awful for three quarters and Enes Kanter struggled with Robin Lopez all night. That's our top three right now, all doing badly which leaves us with an L to 5 win Bulls. The good news is from the young guys. Frank was our best player in spurts, Dotson showed some offensive talent and Doug had something to prove in this one. We lived and died by the vets, but the youngsters on the bench were the reason we got within striking distance.
KP: Our boy's peripheral vision gets the biggest L of the night. Lauri Markkanen played inspired ball and the Bulls terrorized KP with aggressive doubles all night. 10 for 25 from the field for 23 pts, 4 boards, 2 asts and 2 TO's...he forced things all night. The good news is he had an improved second half, especially during the Knicks rabid comeback late. He made a big defensive play and tied the game with a jumper but he missed a good look from three that would have won the game. Did I mention just 4 boards? Yuck.
Lee: Courtney Lee had a nightmare game through three quarters than went bonkers in the fourth quarter comeback to save his statline. 14 pts, 4 boards, 2 asts on 6/14 from the field. The Knicks needed more from him than one quarter, but he did show everything that's made this such a good season for him in that fourth. Dude was patient with his dribble, picked out the spots to attack and knew when to pass instead of shoot. Just too litte, to late.
Kanter: RoLo gave him fits all night but he still managed a double-double. 10 pts, 11 boards and 4 asts to go with it. But he was 4/11 from the field and made some defensive errors that popped out. He didn't get many opportunities to impact the offensive glass either. It wasn't really bad a game but his impact felt pretty muted compared to his better performances.
Jack: This dude's defense is frustratingly bad. Kris Dunn is starting to realize his potential but Jack made him look like a monster. 6 pts, 4 assists to 3 TO's and 3 boards. He didn't do remotely enough offensively to make up for how badly he got chewed up on the other end in this one. Frank deserves more opportunities with the starters.
Lance: That "he's not Michael Beasley" good will has worn out already. 4 points, 2 boards, no assist, 2 TO's in 25 minutes. He did make some nice plays on the defensive end with hustle and hard work but that's just not enough production or impact in so much time. Like Frank over Jack, the case for Doug McDermott starting over Lance was on clear display tonight.
Frank: The kid really showed up tonight. 10 pts, 7 asts, 2 boards but also 4 TO's in 21 minutes. He was really aggressive and it translated to efficient scoring, some really nice passes and also some mistakes including some telegraphed passes. The steal to no-look assist this kid threw to KP was the highlight of the night. He's looking more and more confidence in his jumper as well. He was 2 for 3 from the three point line with a third field goal where his foot was just on the line. Defensively, he's night and day with Jarrett Jack. He's constantly pestering his man, gets through screens and even if he gives up a step there's that wingspan to still make them struggle. Even with his mistakes, he deserved to close out this game.
Doug: Doug McDermott came into Chicago with something to prove. Dude balled out all night and showed every aspect of his game. 10 pts, 6 boards, 4 asts on 4 of 8 from the field with 2 three pointers. He scored cutting to the basket, made some nice passes, got busy on the boards and was quietly effective on the defensive end too. Beasley is awful on defense, Lance is invisible on offense, Doug is balanced option that still hasn't gotten a shot to start.
KOQ: A nice effective game in fifteen minutes for KOQ. He had 10 points, grabbed 3 boards, added an assist and while he was credited with 1 block I'm pretty sure it shoulda been 2. Dude was a presence on both ends, challenging shots and finishing when he got the rock. He was 4 for 5, getting a lot of easy inside looks off pick and rolls. Nice, solid performance.
Beasley: Michael Beasley had 9 points and 5 boards with 2 TO's in his 15 minutes out there. He was productive on the stat sheet and 3 for 5 from the field but his defensive play was once again bad enough to nullify it. His lack of awareness on the defensive end at times is brutal. It's aggressively bad like a Lance Thomas pump fake and drive.
Dotson: Dotson was 3 for 5 tallying 6 points and adding an assist in 15 minutes out there. He plays good defense every night out there and this was a game where he actually looked for his shot a few times which was nice to see. There are plenty of times when he's quiet out there, but he's quietly impacting the game with defensive play. His jumper is a real weapon and if he starts looking for it more, he could be ready for more opportunities.
Hornacek: This was a Pennywise kinda night for the man, he really did the kids dirty. He road the vets even though the younger guys were outperforming them all night. The second unit had certain guys that were playing the best ball on our squad, namely McDermott and Frank. Those two belonged out there in the last couple of minutes, especially after the starters immediately gave up a run to the Bulls. I get that the Knicks are playing to win and not tank, but sometimes the young guys give us a better chance to win the game. That was pretty glaring tonight.
