90s kids what was it like transitioning from 2-d to 3-d games?

A lot of 3d was ugly. It finally took the ps3 generation to where I felt 3d could wow me like some of the 2d games did. I'm talking full 3d here, not games with 3d models on top of prerendered backgrounds.

the ugliness of 3d did not hit me back then. the novelty of 3d was stronger than the ugliness. i had begun to view 2d as a stifling limitation to games and was basically giving any 3d game extra points for simply allowing sideways movement or camera rotation. i slightly overhyped it and then 3d came back down to earth when i got to the gamecube and began to truly go back to respecting 2d gameplay and graphics.

I grew up poor, only had an NES. So the first time I walked into an internet cafe (RIP) it was like :banderas:

"I can shoot these Nazi pricks with a machine gun :pacspit:"
"wtf, these COD mufuggas flying helicopters oughta be in the Air Force :skip:"

now we got drones and shyt,...so I wasn't that far off :merchant:

Edit: i know this is supposed to be about PS1 and N64, but tbh half of that stuff was just laughing at how ugly they made Stone Cold Steve Austin or some shyt

I transitioned off Virtua Fighter and old Sega Saturn games like Daytona USA. Didn't have a PSone growing up but Mario 64 was pretty insane due to that controller. Never felt that type of freedom of movement before.

Wasn't mind-blowing though. The only game that ever did that for me was Fight Night round 3

It was dope, I was at my homie's house and he couldn't stop talking about how real everything looked on his HDTV and I'll admit, I was doubtful.
But he put on one of the WWE SD vs. RAW games and the water droplets on Triple H's face when he pours the water from his water bottle at the entrance looked real as fukk.

I legit had a mixture of :gladbron::dwillhuh::bryan::whew: all at the same time.
