Let's get down to the real questions...

if unemployment was 7.7% why are more stores continuing to go out of business, more families getting kicked out their homes and more homelessness out in the street?

This is why:

Simple logic.

The right wing spin is that the employment rate is dropping because a discouraged work force has simply "given up". That spin isnt in agreement with the U6 figures, which accounts for that very unit of employment analysis:

Portal Seven | U6 Unemployment Rate

Additionally, you are aware of the baby boomer population and its social and economic implications correct? Well, they've been at retirement age for a minute, so....

We're talking 350k/mo retirement average (and most months have 30 days which would be 300k/mo if they didn't estimate low). And yes, of course, this is happening in real time.

Just because someone reaches retirement age does not mean they can retire. :what:

You said they were retiring in waves, nothing you posted supports this

I am quite aware of the boomer situation, not sure you are

There isnt a lot of concrete data on retirees. We have to make inferences out of hard data available. The info I provided, in collaboration with common sense, should guide you here. We know that 26% of the U.S pop are boomers. The oldest reached retirement age two years ago. If you dont think there is any statistical significance with those variables, in conjunction w/ the figures provided earlier, and the employment rate, then you have an agenda here. Period.

But you claimed boomers are retiring in waves....you have nothing that backs up that statement??? You made that point to support your opinion and I'm asking you to back up your claim. That is all

Like I said, just cause they are reaching that magical retirement age, doesnt mean that they can retire.

How do you average the population of a Nation of 310 plus Million people to only have 7% out of work. How many of this is broken down to working people/working fulltime/part-time/weekends/holidays etc?

88 Million People are without employment...that's the reality..not this 7.7%.

The 86 million invisible unemployed - May. 3, 2012

that's because historically anything over 7% isn't good. :upsetfavre:

Carter was voted out with 7.5% unemployment...after 4 entire years...Regan only moved unemployment down to 7.2%, but folks could see the pattern of the jobs market improving so they voted Regan back in.

The same thing is going on with Obama, though at a much slower pace. And he also had/has a much worse recession than Regan had to deal with.

Regan also had support from Democrats working with him for the betterment of the country, unlike the continued opposition that the Republicans are giving Obama.

Folks need to chill and let Obama :cook: If he gets some help he could have us back on track (6.9% or less) by the middle of this term.

:youngsabo: I thought Obama did it though

The number is the number....

Obama didn't change it. I don't really remember the specifics, but it has changed since the inception of the performance metric.

I don't think people that just sit on their asses and do nothing should be counted in the Unemployment rate.

So, I don't have a problem with "discouraged" workers being removed from the stat.

Were are moving towards the Western European model, and High unemployment is a characteristic of that model. It's just a cost of our metamorphosis from American to European economy. It's the new normal.

What "european model" features the type of inequality that is measured in our wealth distribution?
