I think I only "compliment" (if that's the word??) appearance during sex via dirty talk

I remember complimenting my wife's efforts to balance her career with her personal life
In that she went hard at work,, but she unplugged and left it at the office
And she is fairly successful.. A middle manager ... Given significant roles/duties in her company

I also complimented her parenting.. That she stayed involved with her adult children,, but also pushed them away.. Keeping boundaries

I remember those two compliments.. I think that showed the right level of attention / awareness on my part for early phase of relationship

Once you are a couple.. You compliment to affirm and encourage.. Like "yes dear, you look great" and now we need to leave before we are late to the show etc
But she's my wife.. It's my job to tell her if she has lipstick on her teeth or whatever

I learned a hard lesson today about this.

I'm classmates with this person who's genderfluid, but if you look at them, you would assume they were a girl. Told them they looked good in class and they were legit offended. Told me that it's the millionth time some guy in class commented on their looks when they didn't ask and didn't know the guy.

And when I said it, they were like "I know I'm pretty. Thanks tho. " Right after saying it left a bad taste in their mouth.

I gave them validation for free and made them feel like a victim.
