I watched Obama/Romeny in 2012, it wasn't a disaster. It was just closer than a lot of people thought. Obama was kind of distant and hesitant, Romeny was pretty solid. But, all Obama needed was some debate coaching, and he was a lot more relaxed, on his game for the next one.
