Jermall Charlo Overweight For Title Fight Against Juan Macias Montiel On Saturday Night

Jermall Charlo didn’t seem overly concerned about being overweight Friday afternoon in Houston.

The defending WBC middleweight champion stepped on the Texas Combative Sports Program’s scale at 160.4 pounds for his 12-round, 160-pound championship clash against Juan Macias Montiel on Saturday night. Mexico’s Montiel met his contractual obligation by officially weighing in at 159.5 pounds.

Houston’s Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs) was given two hours to weigh in at least 160 pounds, the middleweight limit. If Charlo cannot make weight, he would be stripped of his WBC belt, but it would still be at stake for Mexico’s Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs).

Regardless, the Charlo-Montiel match will headline a Showtime Championship Boxing tripleheader from Toyota Center in Houston.

If he makes weight, Charlo, 31, will make the fifth defense of the WBC middleweight title he won when he knocked out Hugo Centeno Jr. in the second round in April 2018 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Montiel, 27, boxed to a 10-round split draw with Centeno (27-3-1, 14 KOs, 1 NC) in December 2019 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

The William Hill sports book has established Charlo as a 33-1 favorite versus Montiel, the WBC’s fourth-ranked challenger for Charlo’s championship.

Three of the four fighters who will appear in the first two fights on Showtime’s telecast also made weight Friday.

Mexico’s City’s Isaac Cruz (21-1-1, 15 KOs) came in at 133 pounds for his 10-round lightweight fight against countryman Francisco Vargas (27-2-2, 19 KOs). The 36-year-old Vargas, a former WBC super featherweight champion, weighed in at 134 pounds.

The Cruz-Vargas fight is Showtime’s co-feature Saturday night.

Former WBO junior featherweight champion Angelo Leo got on the scale exactly at the contracted limit of 122 pounds for his 10-rounder against Aaron Alameda. Mexico’s Alameda officially weighed 123.8 pounds.

Alameda (25-1, 13 KOs) was nearly two pounds overweight. The 27-year-old southpaw was given two hours to return to the scale at 122 pounds or less, or he’ll face financial penalties.

The 27-year-old Leo (20-1, 9 KOs), of Albuquerque, New Mexico, lost his WBO 122-pound belt to Stephen Fulton in his last fight, which took place January 23 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Philadelphia’s Fulton (19-0, 8 KOs) beat Leo comfortably on all three scorecards to take the championship Leo won in his previous fight, a 12-round, unanimous-decision victory over Tramaine Williams (19-1, 6 KOs, 1 NC).

The Leo-Alameda match will open Showtime’s telecast at 9 p.m. EDT/6 p.m. PDT.

idk how I feel about that, he could be P4P top 10, no problem if someone has him there but don't think it's that clear cut or that him being top 5 would be had he beat Castano.

as things play themselves out I kinda feel like Jermell reign at 154 is getting a bit overrated. as a Bud stan I know unifying comes with certain degree of hype but it's like he gets credit for being the last man standing where as the people who were forecast to be in his path cancelled themselves out. (hurd and to lesser extent williams)
the division got a lot of hype cause dudes were fighting and beating each other but as times goes on it's looking like that was cause alot of them were just mid
if Jermall could actually get in the ring with the guys in his division I think he could be on par if not have better resume than his brother.
