Canelo Alvarez and challenger John Ryder both successfully made weight behind closed doors on Friday morning ahead of their world super-middleweight title clash in Guadalajara on Saturday.
Alvarez, the WBA, WBO, IBF and WBC champion, weighed in bang on the 168lb limit, half a pound up from what he weighed against Gennady Golovkin in September.
Ryder, the 32-5 WBO interim champion at super middleweight, came in the marginally lighter man at 167.9lbs.
Now the pair will meet at a ceremonial weigh-in at the Teatro Degollado on Friday afternoon in what will be their final face-to-face meeting before they clash in the ring at the Estadio Akron in front of an expected crowd of 50,000+ at the Estadio Akron in Zapopan.
This is Canelo’s first fight back in his hometown of Guadalajara since he beat Ryan Rhodes back in the June of 2011. That fight was for the WBC super-welterweight title, a whole 14 pounds lighter than he is now.
Canelo said: “I think it’s the correct time to come to Mexico and bring this fight to my people, who support me from the beginning, and I’ve had a lot of good experience in other places so, now, bringing this fight to my people is just an amazing thing.
“Yeah. Since 2011, 12 I’ve wanted to come back to fight in Mexico but it’s a little bit difficult to make a [big] fight here in Mexico. It’s the correct moment to bring this fight.”
