45% of American jobs are at risk of being taken by computers in the next two decades.

We can barely adapt now.. much less when computers are even taking minimum wage jobs lol. Between outsourcing and the technological revolution most Americans have no chance imo.

Feels like Thomas Friedman's 'The World Is Flat' was prophetic. Specialization, deep computer skills or high level management will win out. All else will eventually fail. Global labor market plus technological advancement means that low level skills and manual labor are increasingly worthless.

The missing story is that services are the fastest growing part of the US economy. There will be certain experiences that people will pay other humans to provide that computers can't replace. Personal training, massages, athletic endeavors and instruction, acting, writing, etc.

So you don't think we can adapt and begin training more people and future generations to make, operate, and innovate computers? :patrice:

I guess I just have a lot more faith in Americans than you do...:manny:

My question is what do you propose we do? stop technology?:skip: Create legislation to prevent the introduction of new technology?:skip:

So in the future, the underclass will only grow as more and more low skill jobs are taken over by machines. Only the highly educated and highly skilled will have jobs. The rest of us will live in shelters or on the streets.

I dont know the answer tbh but I am a bit of a pessimist. This is a country of 300 million plus. Your solution of just training more people in computers doesn't seem very comprehensive.

This. And even then the number of highly skilled will only get smaller as most of the population will be jobless and broke.

Why would prices go down? That's not good business. They will probably go up if anything
This is a common misconception.

Businesses can only charge what the market will bear, and do well when they can offer goods at a lower price than competition and still turn a profit.(i.e Wal-Mart or McDonalds).

I don't think that would be enough. The competition for the jobs left would be astronomical. People have to compete with a large pool of unemployed people now... Imagine having to compete with that PLUS computers and automation. lol.

I think this is the logical evolution of industry. This is different than in the past because, artificial intelligence will take the human element out of production and services. That is a dangerous thing. What can you do when a machine can think of an idea better and faster than you can.

I think there are only 2 outcomes that can occur:

A. a socialist society were very few people do actual work and actually live out their lives in relative leisure; a dream society if you will.

or

B. an incredibly small upper class that hordes all of the earth's resources and services for their own benefit while a massive underclass lives in squalor. (Think Metropolis or Elysium)

I like to think that option A. will occur, but increasingly I think option B. will occur. While there are plenty of philanthropist billionaires and millionaires around, there is an increasing resentment towards those who do not have, and those who need a hand, by ironically those who really don't have shyt theirselves. The zeal for celebrities, uber-rich lifestyle, the culture of me, and the fasade that everyone can ascertain those things propogates option B.

Ultimately, the masses only and the masses can let this happen; because we consistently shoot ourselves in the foot in backlash of what's socially responsibile.
