For some one to be aware of a Jay Z cd coming out and seek out a Promo code and go to the site and hope they can get it on the very first day of it's release...
An indifferent fan wouldn't go through all that. Many of them could've been purchases as well

if I had the service, i'd grab the promo code too, just to see what all the hype is about. it doesn't mean I would pay money to hear that chit.
that's why I say, the new system is terrible. counting streams & downloads as sales. all you need now is a bunch of hype, and any joe schmoe can go platinum.

This is my beef with people crying about Jay's Samsung and Sprint deals. Even if you take away both of those deals, Jay Z has 16 PHYSICAL PLATINUM ALBUMS. Yet dudes wanna talk about "Fake, He created". Y'all know this was a business move. People cried about Samsumg deal on "MCHG" yet the album debut at #1 with over 500K sold and went on to sell 1.3 Million US and over 2 Million copies globally outside of the Samsung numbers. Think about that? Again the whole streaming is new based on the last 3 or 4 years. Jay got double digit legit Plats and Plaques albums and singles.
Jay Z did what any smart business man would do trying to recoup on their art that's being devalued due to bootlegging and illegal streaming which the downfall began with Napster in the late 90's and just accelerated in the last 15 years. The problem with this era is everyone thinks music should be free and they are entitled to it. Jay counteracted that by using major phone companies to ensure his music is compensated properly. There's no denying Millions of people heard it. Back in 2013' With Samsung, the app crashed but it recovered. They said they had Millions of people downloading the album. Then "MCHG" was pirated over 2 Million times during that week.
The same thing happen with Sprint and "4:44", they definitely gave out millions of streams and downloads between Sprint and Tidal. They already confirmed the album was illegally downloaded over a Million times. So how could Jay "Cheat" when people are not only downloading the album and streaming it on Tidal but also there were illegally downloading the album over a million of times. The demand is ALWAYS there for a Jay album. Dudes are just salty Jay finds new ways to stay on top and ahead of the curve. Now that he released it to the public fully, let's see how the numbers will be when the album comes in #1 next week with over 400-500K sold without Sprint just like "MCHG" did without Samsung.

of course MCHG went platinum outside of the Samsung numbers. he had more promotion than a presidential campaign. I couldn't even watch the summer league that year without the MCHG commercial airing on NBA-TV every 5 minutes. then add to the fact that theres barely any mainstream releases no more; all these big-budget albums that come out are pretty much guaranteed to crack a mil.
that chit doesn't impress. they can take anybody and force them on the public like that.
