This is how I rank ‘em as far as living preference these are among the top 10 largest cities in the state.

NYC
Buffalo
White Plains
New Rochelle
Albany
Yonkers
Hempstead
Syracuse
Rochester
Binghamton

Been to ‘em all…can’t speak for some of the other smaller cities. Hempstead is not a city but rather a town in Long Island within Nassau County. Prodigy and Method Man are actually from there not the boroughs. It has 793,000 it’s the second most populous area of New York State. The UBS Arena new home to Hot 97 Summer Jam/New York Islanders hockey and Belmont Stakes are in nearby Elmont which is part of Hempstead.

In recognition/fame nowadays it’s NYC, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Albany in that order.

This says Hempstead is only ~59,000:

I kinda just consider Long Island and Westchester as part of NY. Yonkers literally right outside The Bronx and LI runs right into Queens (never been but looks like Elmont directly touches Queens). Those places are right there, it's hard for me to view them independently. I get what you're saying, though...

I'm surprised several people got Syracuse over Rochester. I like em both and I think Albany has jumped over Rochester but Syracuse is kinda surprising to me...

And has the hierarchy changed any within the last decade?

Note, Top 10 obviously, doesn't necessarily mean ten biggest cities, though it could correlate with that. It's just the 10 most relevant cities in your state, however you define relevance...

I'll start:

North Carolina
1. Charlotte
2. Raleigh
3. Greensboro
4. Durham
5. Winston-Salem
6. Asheville
7. Wilmington
8. Fayetteville
9. Greenville
10. Cary or Concord

If I was doing it as a pyramid rather than sequentially:

Charlotte, Raleigh
Greensboro
Durham, Winston
Asheville, Wilmington
Fayetteville, Greenville
Cary, Concord

California
1. Los Angeles
2. San Francisco
3. San Diego
4. San Jose
5. Sacramento
6. Oakland
7. Fresno
8. Bakersfield
9. Anaheim
10. Riverside

Pyramid:

Los Angeles, San Francisco
San Diego
San Jose, Sacramento, Oakland
Fresno, Bakersfield, Anaheim, Riverside
Riverside is under Bakersfield?
:scusthov:
I was born in LA, lived in SD for 5 years, then lived in the IE for another 4. Went to Murrieta Valley High School.
:mjpls:
I can rank the top ten Inland Empire towns with ease. I don’t know anything about Central Cali though. My Sister does live in Apple Valley and Nephew is stationed in Barstow.

That’s the village of Hempstead. The town has 22 villages with a population of 793,000.

I would say the Westchester cities have enough population and their own unique character and they’re much better than places like Binghamton, Newburgh, Utica, etc.

As far as recognition Rochester has slid while Syracuse maintains its recognition due to the clout of the university.

So Hempstead basically functioms as another borough?

Kinda since boroughs operate somewhat like towns as far as governance.

If it were an incorporated city it would be the 18th largest city in the country. It’s a collection of different villages and hamlets that make up one big town.

I’m not 100 % familiar with Northern Cali like that so I can’t really rate it overall. Every time I’ve been there though was great.

In terms of SoCal they really built Corona up. Some parts of that location are dope af. That region is enormous and gets actual winter season. Crazy the price you could have got a big ass home for back in the day. Drove by recently and they really expanded the 91 to get in and out of there a lot faster. No bullshyt I made it from Long Beach to Lake Elsinore in 45 minutes recently. Fast Trak probably makes that day-to-day trivial. Along the same lines, Orange County is also a great area that’s got more to do and arguably has better food than LA.

Do people identify by their Village/Hamlet, or by their town?
