Donald Trump tried to stick to his campaign’s new script on the economy Wednesday, but veered off course to attack Kamala Harris as a left-wing Californian who would flood the country with undocumented thugs.
“They’re taking their criminals and their people from mental institutions, and they’re putting them into our country because we have stupid people like Kamala and Joe running our country,” Trump told supporters at a rally in Asheville, North Carolina.
Calling Harris “far more liberal than crazy Bernie Sanders,” Trump portrayed himself as smarter, more authentic and mentally stable than his opponent, who he accused Democrats of hiding.
“What happened to her laugh?” he said. “I haven’t heard that laugh in about a week.”
“That’s the laugh of a crazy person, I will tell you,” he continued. “They told her, ‘Don’t laugh, don’t laugh,’ No, her laugh is career-threatening.”
At times, he did manage to steer his attacks back to the economy. Flanked by the new slogan, “No Tax on Tips,” he suggested that Harris would try to steal his proposals when she outlines her economic vision in North Carolina on Friday.
“When Kamala lays out her fake economic plan this week—probably will be a copy of my plan, because basically that’s what she does,” he said.
But he often returned to personal obsessions, like how beautiful she looked on TIME’s recent cover. “They don’t use her picture, they don’t use her picture, they use an artist sketch,” the former president said. “I want to use that artist. I want to find that artist. I like him very much.”
The diversions were typical for a candidate who is anything but disciplined. As both campaigns try to reprise the old campaign theme that propelled Bill Clinton to victory in 1992, reports have suggested Trump’s advisers are tearing their hair out over a man who can’t stay on message.
Trump himself seemed to realize what he was doing—he was just perfectly OK with it.
“Today we’re going to talk about one subject and then we’ll start going back to the other ‘cause we sort of love that, don’t we?” he said, referencing the economy. “They say it’s the most important subject, I’m not sure it is.”
Based on the messaging his campaign was putting out, it was pretty important.
“Since Kamala is not doing any press, she can’t explain why crippling inflation rates have resulted in a 20% increase in prices since she took office,” a Wednesday campaign press release read. “Her campaign is hiding Kamala in the basement because they know she owns every single disastrous policy record of the Biden-Harris administration."
Other campaign communications indicated Trumpworld has pivoted from “Bidenflation” to “Kamalanomics,” pinning responsibility for inflation and high costs of living on the vice president.
While Trump spent his afternoon issuing doomsday warnings about a return to Depression-era calamity if Harris wins, Democrats played defense on an issue they, too, hope to dominate.
“People in western North Carolina know when they’re getting played because they experienced it when then-President Donald Trump ran our economy into the ground like he drove his own casinos into bankruptcy, with low wages for working people, fewer jobs and high unemployment,” Democratic Governor Roy Cooper wrote in a statement ahead of Trump’s rally.

A vice-presidential debate could air on CBS next month if both parties agree

The Democratic Party’s presumptive vice presidential nominee, Tim Walz, is ready to throw down. The politician, who is Minnesota’s governor, has agreed to participate in a vice presidential debate in New York City that would air on CBS on Oct. 1. The network reported that the Trump campaign’s veep nominee, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, has yet to agree.
Nevertheless, Walz wrote on social media, “See you on October 1, JD.” And Kamala Harris’ campaign waved a red flag with a statement. “Harris for President has accepted CBS’ invitation to a Vice Presidential Candidate Debate on October 1,” a campaign official said. “Governor Walz looks forward to debating JD Vance — if he shows up.”
Although Vance has had plenty of time to agree to even consider a debate, he has not. Trump named Vance as his running mate on July 15 but the campaign wouldn’t commit at the time to what would have been a debate with Harris. A week later, Biden dropped out of the race, and subsequently endorsed Harris as the Democratic party’s presidential nominee. The Democratic party confirmed that Harris was the party’s nominee earlier this month. Its national convention will kick off on Aug. 19.
After attempting to back out of a showdown with Harris, Trump agreed to debate the vice president on ABC on Sept. 10. Other dates for future debates are still being confirmed.
As soon as Walz agreed to be Harris’ running mate, he came out of the gates with a fiery rage. “These guys are creepy and, yes, just weird as hell,” he said of Trump and Vance at a Philadelphia rally last week.

Trump’s Asheville, North Carolina rally was weird.
Let’s recap it:
There were quite a few empty seats in the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium that only holds 2,431 people.
Donald was late. Again.
He thanks Mark Robinson, the vile man running for governor who said he wants “to go back to the America where women couldn’t vote.”
He bragged about leading in the polls when most say that he’s losing.
He’s spent a lot of time whining about Biden.
He said “our country is finished” if Harris wins.
He’s complaining about the Time magazine cover of Harris because it’s an “artist sketch,” then he says he wants that artist for himself. Mashed potatoes for brains.
Back to Biden.
He said he’s doing an “intellectual speech” today. Bro has to be joking.
He said “mortgages have tripled.” False.
He’s babbling about “Kamala’s fantasies.” Oh boy.
He called Harris and Walz “beyond socialists.”
He calls Harris a “complainer.” Has this grown ass man child even heard himself speak?
He said VP Harris being “kept off” of the media because of her laugh, and that “she doesn’t laugh anymore.” He says she’s “crazy” and “has the laugh of a person with some big problems.” He should look in the mirror first before saying this.
He’s whining about Harris copying him. I love this for him!
He said “women, Blacks, and Hispanics” had it better under him.
He bragged about the “largest tax cuts in history” but forgot to mention that it was for billionaires.
He claims that “today, we’re being laughed at all over the world.” Yeah. The world laughs at HIM.
He says VP Harris “is not smart.” The projection today is off the chain.
He had issues saying “critical,” “buried,” “ventilators,” “amnesty,” and “supply chain.”
He claimed he forced the National Guard on Tim Walz during the unrest in Minnesota. He did not. In fact, he praised Walz at the time for handling the situation.
He’s taking credit that the stock market is up and says it will crash like 1929 if he loses.
He holds up Tic Tacs and calls them inflation. Bro is cooked.
He said Europe is “a basic disaster” because they’re “woke.”
He cries that a gas pipeline isn’t being built in a “very poor” area of New York and said “we are going to go to a net zero policy. What does that mean? Um…I have no idea.” Stable genius.
He claims we won’t have power to watch tv when the wind isn’t blowing. Not surprised because he told Elon to put solar panels in Tesla’s trunks the other day, and thought solar airplanes would fall out of the sky if it wasn’t sunny out.
He told a woman in the audience that she looks “healthy” and “looks very nice.” What a creep.
He’s babbling about donuts and donut shops when talking about energy. Is he ok?
Yet again, he’s talking about Venezuela. Is he planning on fleeing there? His obsession with Venezuela is weird.
He whines about not getting credit for providing “outfits” during COVID.
He said he’s going to get rid of regulations. Make cancer great again!
Back to crying about VP Harris stealing “no tax on tips.”
He said “the fake new Kamala takes down.” What??!
Then he says VP Harris “is not a smart person.”
He claimed someone in the small audience was “a spy.” His paranoia is outta control today.
Donald is talking about a woman in New York who was raped. Is he talking about E. Jean Carroll who was raped by him?
He said he’s keeping the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) even though “it stinks,” unless he can do something better. This proves he has no healthcare plan.
