On some level, the "just joking" claim is disingenuous in any context, because to a Trumpist, "SCOTUS just decided your interracial marriage is illegal, cry more" is itself a joke.
Cruelty and violence are "jokes" to them because Trumpists have dehumanized us as targets.

I thought Trump was going to lose before this but there's something ironic about the stage being set for the media, pollsters, and historians grabbing onto a joke as the turning point. In many ways the genesis of a lot of the ugly ignorance and stupidity we see in politics came from comedians. Whether you want to blame the Rogan/Corolla types or the shock jocks of the past, mediocre white comedians have driven this shyt into the ground while fostering resentment, racism, and anti-intellectualism. Add in large groups of men who are stuck in the perpetual adolescence of comic book movies and videogames and you get a lot of the social and communication problems we have today.
The funniest thing about this to me? There are multiple aspects of fascism at play here but the overall effectiveness of the movement is kneecapped because these men also believe military service and self sacrifice are lame. So the result are just a bunch of dudes on the sideline being cavemen, doing jack shyt beyond consuming brain poison.
