I think I would have agreed with you more before the GOP started waging a social and cultural war on a lot of the people in that group. I could be wrong, but I think that the GOP might herd a lot of those folks into the Democratic voting bloc for the foreseeable future, especially women.

This is not to say that leftist and progressive Dems shouldn't try to drag those voters to the left on economics once they've got them, though!
That’s all im getting at. Like @King Kreole said earlier, why isn’t Harris using this time where they are scaring us about fascism to move to at least the left of Biden? Instead she chose to run a 90s GOP campaign. It may work, but if abortion becomes legal federally—and the cynic in me thinks it’s better to keep this a campaign issue for both parties—what’s keeping this coalition together?

Fair enough. The GOP has certainly politically engaged many of those people with social and cultural arguments. I have more skepticism than you do that the Democratic Party, if it were so inclined, could engage nearly as many people with economic arguments. Again, that doesn't mean that Dems shouldn't try, especially if demographics change enough over the next fifteen years that the GOP struggles to shift its message and consolidate its bases and its attempts to lock in power don't take hold. There will be a natural chance there to keep one eye on the GOP, but also allow one eye onto the ideological conversation that everyone needs to have within the Democratic party.
Exactly

This is true. It's frustrating that some leftists run for the presidency every year in obscurity instead of doing what the rightmost of right-wingers did and start winning school board seats, city council seats, etc. From a political standpoint, that's where we need to start, and with trustworthy candidates who come from those communities and can make people comfortable with leftist economic policies.
It’s why I said before that there is no leftist infrastructure in this country. You can’t keep going to the plate trying to hit a walk off Grand Slam when you no one is on base and it’s the second inning. You gotta build.

Really, the only thing we disagree on is how possible it is that the Democratic party - or some leftist party that displaces the GOP and lets the Dems be the center-right party that they dream of being - can make real headway toward becoming a serious power in government within our lifetimes, which honestly I hope you're right and I'm wrong about.
Tbh, in a winner takes all system it’s very difficult. You also need a catastrophic event—which Covid and George Floyd’s murder were but a lot of grifters in BLM and the corporate DEI movement got their bags and left everyone else in status quo. It may never happen but waiting for the Donkeys and Elephants to do it for you is fukking stupid.

SCOTUS signaled that they'll go after birth control, IVF, and all sorts of things.

Further, legislation can easily be overturned by an R-R-R government. The threat will be there going forward, I think.

But we seem to agree on 95% of this stuff. Thank you for the convo.

That feels like lazy logic that was disproven long ago. If abortion is codified legally why would any woman or democrat say "I can rest now." There is no going back to the old status quo. It's clear republicans will not stop until they eliminate abortion. We'd simply go from legal challenges to Roe to legal challenges to a federal abortion law. Which once again means legal battles over judges and stacking specific courts in order to get the perfect case back to the Supreme Court before Thomas and Alito retire or die.

Flip this argument around: did republicans stop fighting once Roe died? No. They got even more extreme, and went even further. The activism wing didn't declare victory and go quietly into the night...instead they immediately started talking about national abortion bans for the future and state bans for the present.

It's interesting people saying this on their platforms now (like Van and Rachel) when many of us on here been saying it since 2016... Poor, middle class, doesn't matter the tax bracket... white men (and many white women) will vote for Trump no matter what for the simple fact that he's a white man who they feel will go to bat for them and tear everything else down.

You can say "Hilary should have did this..." or "Kamala isn't doing enough blank...." but at the end of the day the battle is trying to gather up enough people to combat the 70 million racist cacs who will show up and vote Trump no matter what

But...but... The Uncommitted are gonna decide Michigan...

I mean, it's still possible. Again, it's all about the reaction from the suburbs. If Dearborn and Dearborn Heights and Allen Park have enough uncommited from the Arab community out there to the range of 100 to 150k non votes, that might not be enough to make up the difference. Detroit's probably gonna give you an extra 20k you didn't get in 2020, the big bump is gonna come from suburban women.

I had some business downtown this morning and I'll say I personally saw at least 20 people voting and a few drop off mail ins. And Downtown doesn't have anywhere near the population as some of the other districts. So hopefully that's a good sign for turn out.
