this is why I think Dems are not in as much trouble as many claim for 2022

the electorate is very different now than in pre-2018 midterm cycles, when Rs owned the suburbs that you could count on to show up for midterms and off cycle elections

today, Dems got the suburb vote, while Rs live and die off rural. and all signs are that’s not changing - as Rs are NOT even trying to do the things that would persuade the modern suburban voter, they just doubling down on what the rural voter wants
  • that rural voter turned out and made Rs competitive in 2020, a general election with Trump on the ticket
  • that rural voter DIDN’T show up in 2018 midterm cycle, technically without Trump on the ticket (although he was president)
  • that rural voter DIDN’T show up in 2021 GA runoff, an off cycle election without Trump on the ticket
  • which will 2022 be more like?

But how many states is that helpful in? Alabama isn’t slipping.

Plus you have the NE problem where they vote Republican every so often for whatever reason.

Places like Ohio and Wisconsin is where the rural vote is strong and getting stronger.

Despite all this the GOP will get control of the House in 2022 because gerrymandering and voter suppression.
