Newark has gone from a city that was routinely one of the Top 10-ish most violent cities in the country, in the 90s and 00s, to a city now that probably is only barely Top 30, if that. It's remarkable, and for me the similarity in turnaround with Richmond is notable...

Richmond was also one of the ten worst cities nationally, and is no longer that. It's reverse in public safety and quality of life isn't as dramatic as Newark's but for both to be where they are, from where they were, and still be plurality black (Newark 48.6%, Richmond 42%), is remarkable and something more of us should highlight more...

Leadership. First from Booker and now from Baraka.

Worth noting that it's one of the major cities that saw no/minimal rioting in 2020. The Mayor and the residents who lived through the '67 riots as kids refused to let it happen again.
On top of other factors, I think the lawlessness of the 2020 riots emboldened the criminal element and contributed to the upsurge in crime. They hijacked the protests to steal and pillage. And have been on that bullshyt ever since then.

Even among gentrification, on the outside looking in it appears Newark has been able to retain much of its black middle class and black wealth. Is that accurate?

Because if so, this makes Newark a model city for other places to copy, as gentrification has driven most black wealth to the burbs while whites and new immigrants fill up formerly black neighborhoods in the core city...

Umm there are a bunch of different groups and genders involved in homicides. It is not all gang and ignorant robberies. Homicides can also be domestic in nature or in self defense. You guys are confusing "homicide" and "murder."

southern and midwest cities are mad fukking ugly from an aesthetic stand point.

I'm from the midwest (Kansas City, Missouri) and can't say I disagree.

There's buildings that have been abandoned 30-40+ years all over midtown.
