I agree with your overall sentiments, but in @Pressure's case, his interactions with others seem to be what prompted his change. His post mostly focuses on other people's hardships rather than his own. To me, it reads like he brought up his son to provide context for why he was having those interactions.I'm gonna be blunt: this is some Trump voter shyt right here and how the electorate at large votes/reacts. Didn't give a shyt until something directly affected you or people nearby. Beforehand your thoughts were "out of sight, out of mind," just like Trump voters who didn't care about his bullshyt when it hurt other people and complained when it finally reached them.
There's zero compassion in this country for others and the votes reflect that. If people cared, Bernie or Warren would get 90% of the vote.
You're right though, it's a common theme among Republicans. I remember a few years ago Rob Portman's son came out as gay so Portman changed his position on gay marriage people were praising him. It's like dude only cares about gay rights because he found out his son was gay. Does his daughter (or son) have to marry a black man in order for him to care about police brutality and other issues facing black America?
Edit: It looks like he clarified that was the case.
