No more people getting ethnicity confused and repping the wrong set. Also a big deal in the fight for repartitions as the one of the biggest questions if "who do they give it to?".

For the 2020 census, the U.S. Census Bureau is changing how it will ask black people to designate their race. Under the check box for "Black or African American," the bureau is adding a new space on the census questionnaire for participants to write in their non-Hispanic origins, according to a recent memo from the head of the 2020 census. "African American," "Jamaican" and "Nigerian" are listed as examples of origins on a questionnaire the bureau is testing for 2020.

The change means many black people in the U.S. may have to take a closer look at their family trees to answer what can be a thorny question: Where are you really from? While many black immigrants can cite ties to a specific country, that question is difficult, if not impossible, for many U.S.-born African-Americans to answer.

This is what bothers me. I can't answer this question. Don't know what my background is.
You are African American, you aren't an immigrant or a descendant of one, your ethnicity was created here and your ancestors come from like 4 different countries at minimum

I think this would be more beneficial for the black immigrant population. It'd be good to know which countries make up some of the black population. I'd imagine you could use this as a foundation to a lot policy analysis.

E.g. If a person is of Nigerian origin you gain more insight to how their family unit could/would possibly be structured based on aggregate outcomes from the Nigerian diaspora etc.

I think this is actually a really good move.

None of this is being done for the full benefit of AAs. :comeon:

They are asking White people their origins as well and I suspect this has to do with the former proposal under Obama that was going to combine "Hispanic and Latino" into a race and ethnicity.

That would have resulted in a further decrease the recorded size of the white population .

This way they can still count Hispanic people as either black or white (they're mostly white) and with the additional questions determine How black or White they are when it comes to drawing up districts and allocating funds. :mjpls:

This is gonna benefit AAs in terms of affirmative action. A lot of professional programs(especially med schools and law schools) claim they want to diversify their class seats with more minorities But the truth is they really give better reception to black immigrants than AAs as a bypass to keep their class score averages up. This census will definitely expose these programs cheating potential AA DOS applicants out of this rule.

On the other hand, with more AAs using DNA ancestry tests than ever, they could easily choose an African country the dna results points them closest to and put it as an origin on the the future census.
