LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Former Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, a fan favorite who played on the 2010 national championship team, has died in a one-car crash in Georgia, state police said.

Authorities said Lutzenkirchen, 23, was ejected from a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe when it overturned several times near LaGrange early Sunday morning. He was a passenger in the vehicle.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn called Lutzenkirchen "a great player and competitor" and "a great teammate and friend off the field."

"This is a sad day for the entire Auburn family," Malzahn said Sunday in a statement. "I find peace knowing that even though Philip was taken from us too soon, that he lived his life to the fullest, leaving a lifetime of great memories for his family and friends to cherish forever."

Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said Lutzenkirchen's death was "a devastating tragedy for his family, the Auburn family and his countless friends."

"He had a strong faith, a big heart and a burning desire to help others," Jacobs said. "Philip was a bright light this world desperately needed, and his death leaves a void that can't possibly be filled."

Driver Joseph Ian Davis, 22, was partially ejected from the vehicle and was also killed, investigators said. Authorities said blood was drawn from Davis to determine whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Troopers said 22-year-old Elizabeth Craig of Eatonton, Georgia and 20-year-old Christian Case of Dadeville, Alabama were injured.

Lutzenkirchen set school records for a tight end with 14 career touchdown catches and seven during the 2011 season. He scored the winning touchdown against Alabama to preserve the national title run in 2010, performing an end zone dance later nicknamed "The Lutzie."

His Auburn career ended early when he opted to undergo hip surgery late in his senior season in 2012.

Lutzenkirchen signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Rams but was waived in August 2013. He was a volunteer assistant coach at Saint James School in Montgomery, Alabama who was working at a wealth management company.

Auburn players and coaches posted tributes to Lutzenkirchen on Twitter.

The Auburn Family is broken today with the loss of a great Auburn man and friend Phillip Lutzenkirchen. Crushed and without words.

Lutzenkirchen's Auburn teammate Kodi Burns also posted on Twitter.

Lutz was a brother to me and my other brothers. I loved him. And I will miss him. One of the greatest men I will ever know. RIP love you man

Lutzenkirchen was a graduate of Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia.

Hearing that our TE from 2009-12 died in a car accident last night. Some of yall probably remember him scoring the go ahead TD in the 2010 Iron Bowl.

RIP. :to:

Clemson, Auburn, Florida State, and UCLA are my picks to earn spots in the first-ever college football playoff.

How will they get there?

Clemson and Florida State play in Tallahassee on September 20, but I believe both teams will prove to be worthy of playoff selections despite the fact that one of the two team won’t earn a trip to the ACC championship game because they play in the same division. Keep in mind that Clemson has opportunities for impressive wins at Georgia and against South Carolina, in addition to the week-four matchup against the Seminoles. If FSU slips up, the only loss for the Seminoles will come against Clemson at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Meanwhile, Auburn will repeat as SEC champions and UCLA is my pick to win the PAC-12. I’m counting on the Bruins to take the next step in the trenches to win the line of scrimmage more consistently than in Mora’s first two seasons as head coach.

Who will win the national championship?

I believe the Clemson Tigers will defeat Auburn on January 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington to claim its first national championship since 1981. :merchant::what::mjlol:

1. Clemson: I watched Clemson in person during their spring game weekend and believe the Tigers have the personnel on the defensive front to beat Georgia, Florida State, and South Carolina. It’s an ultra-talented group capable of playing stout run-defense and consistently affecting the quarterback. Write these names down (and watch the second video): Vic Beasley, Corey Crawford, Shaq Lawson, and Grady Jarrett.

Of course, when you think of Clemson, you think of offense. But the Tigers defense gives Clemson a legitimate chance earn a spot in the first-ever college football playoff. Let’s face it, the program took an important step last season by defeating Ohio State in the Orange Bowl and though they lose Tahj Boyd and Sammy Watkins, quarterback Cole Stoudt showed the he is certainly capable of running the show during the Tigers spring game. Although Stoudt will be a first-year starter, he is set to enter his fourth year in Chad Morris’ scheme and has accumulated valuable game experience along the way. In addition, Clemson is solid up front and has bevy of talent on the perimeter.

The marquee games come early and on the road against Georgia and Florida State. Sure, the Seminoles handled Clemson last season in Death Valley, but don’t forget the Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables knows what it takes to beat the Seminoles. Venables was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma when the Sooners defeated FSU 47-14 in 2010 and 23-13 in 2011. In addition, the Tigers have recruited wholeheartedly to Morris’ scheme for three straight years. At the end of the day, Clemson has the talent, depth, and head coach to make 2014 a special one.

Quest for Best

2. Auburn: The Tigers have an experienced and proven quarterback, depth and elite talent on the defensive line, a beast on the outside in Sammie Coates, home games against LSU and South Carolina, and the head coach and coordinators Rhett Lashlee, Ellis Johnson, Scott Fountain) to make it happen. Keep in mind that Auburn was the first team in the last six years to play for a national championship despite not being on the plus side in turnover margin. Expect the Tigers to make strides in that area this season, which will only help them return to the SEC championship game.

3. UCLA: Jim Mora has had three recruiting classes to build depth to systems that have remained the same. The players should fit and the roster should be well-stocked because there hasn’t been much attrition since Mora landed the job. The Bruins have to find a way to beat Oregon and Stanford, and find a way to win at least one unexpected one-possession games. Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone is 8-10 over the last four years in games decided by eight points or fewer. He is 6-3 in games at UCLA in one-possession games. I’m counting on the Bruins to take the next step in their ability to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Keep in mind, the Bruins have given up the seventh most sacks per game of any college football team over the last two seasons. They have to keep Hundley healthy. If they do, UCLA is primed for a special season.

*** Chart: Noel Mazzone vs. Chad Morris

4. Florida State: Expect FSU to have incredible balance on offense with the ability to get nasty in the trenches. You’ll see a more experienced Jameis Winston, an elite place-kicker, and a team that wins the turnover margin on a weekly basis. FSU is 44-1 under Jimbo Fisher when they win the turnover margin. Only Clemson has a chance to beat the Seminoles in the regular season.

The rest of my Top 10 shapes up as follows:

5. Oregon

6. Michigan State

7. Alabama

Clemson Football // Defensive Line Highlights

8. Oklahoma

9. Ohio State

10. Georgia

Last season’s prediction: Baylor vs. Alabama (Yes, I picked Baylor. The Bears were pre-season unranked and predicted to finish fifth in the Big 12. Had the Bears defeated Oklahoma State in late November… and had Alabama finished drives against Auburn….)

This Clemson pick isn’t to be different. WARNING: Do not sleep on the Tigers.
