Southern Mississippi didn’t exactly have a successful year on the field, but first-year head coach Todd Monken wants to make sure his players can be successful off of it.
The Golden Eagles, who finished the season 1-11, had their team banquet Sunday night. That’s where Monken awarded his senior class new suits to wear when they go out for job interviews, according to USM associate professor Bret Becton.
Giving players the suits is allowed by the NCAA because of a new and more flexible approach to its rules. Seniors also are allowed to receive a senior participation gift not to exceed $425 in value. Said Emily James, Associate Director of Public and Media Relations in an email, “This benefit also would not need to be considered as part of the award limitations. As part of the Rules Working Group deregulation process, the membership created significant flexibility in the area of academic support, career counseling or personal development services. Given the purpose of providing the suits as stated in the article, the new legislation would apply.”
