COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina All-American defensive end Jadeveon Clowney did not play against Kentucky on Saturday, and coach Steve Spurrier was not entirely pleased about it.
Clowney came to the coaches before the game and said that bruised ribs that kept him from practice Thursday were too sore for him to play. So the 6-foot-6, 274-pound All-American watched the Gamecocks' 35-28 win against Kentucky from the sidelines, chatting with teammates as South Carolina lost a large lead for the third straight game.
Clowney missed practice on Thursday with the injury, but defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward said it was likely he'd be in the lineup Saturday night. Clowney was announced with the starters but came out without his pads when the game began.
If Clowney "wants to play, we will welcome him to come play for the team if he wants," Spurrier said. "But if he doesn't want to play, he doesn't have to play. Simple as that."

I respect Spurrier for that. On the low, Clowney might be setting a precedent for how projected top 5 pass rushers handle their final season.
I think so, too. That image of Latti's knee in shreds is probably seared in his memory. They're already sending linemen at his knees...In a sense, I don't blame him, but he should handle this better.

If I was a GM I wouldn't draft at him all... but I think he goes from top 5 pick to late first round.. possibly second round depending on how his behavior plays out for the rest of the season.

The media will pound it into the ground...but I doubt it'll effect his draft stock much at all. He'll probably destroy the combine (**if he recovers in time after surgery**).
NFL insiders were questioned following some of his early lackluster performances this year about whether their minds had changed... The collective reply was "absolutely not."

Kearse after a strong year; Win the Hendricks award; Make a highlight reel hit that wins you an ESPY; Get hyped by ESPN; run a 4.4 40; bench press a ridiculous amount; mentally check out of the following CFB season; watch the media turn on you... and set yourself up to collect millions, brehs.

I think J. Football will be a bust, too. Not a huge bust, but compared to the hype, it'd be considered a mild bust. Not Ryan Leaf style, tho.
