Apparently Appel wants 7.2 and isn't budging (hes a Jr. at Stanford), 7.2 would be about 20 teams entire budgets for the 1st 10 rounds

whats with this stupid budget thing, makes no sense

it penalizes teams for drafting the best available players

I'm new to this shyt. I'm use to the NBA draft where its basically scrubs after the first round. So, how many rounds are in the draft and whats the chance to grab a beast in the late rounds?

it used to be almost 100 rounds

It's in the new CBA, all of the teams hate it. Usually MLB assigned a value to the pick but you could sign the player for whatever you wanted. This year they have a total budget for the first 10 rounds (adding up the value of all of those picks) that you cannot exceed without penalties (taxes or loss of picks)

For example heres the Cubs (taken off prosportsdaily)
CUBS' BONUS POOL

Pick No. Pick Value
01 006 $3,250,000
02 043 $1,196,000
03 056 $911,700
04 067 $769,600
05 101 $471,900
06 134 $343,200
07 164 $257,000
08 194 $192,500
09 224 $148,600
10 254 $138,800
11 284 $129,600
12 314 $125,000
TOTAL $7,933,900
AVG. $661,158
MLB RANK* 8th

So the Cubs can only spend 7.9 million on their first 10 picks without facing a penalty
