This is the correct basketball watcher answer. granted I was like 7 when the Lakers had Kobe and Shaq but I don't ever remember him being a perimeter defender or having to deal with a 5 that can shoot like Jok

I remember vividly the Lakers version of Shaq being lazier than anyone when it came to defending outside the paint. He'd flatout refuse to. He was lazy as hell.

Granted, 5s were rarely tasked with defending from 16ft out, but he's someone during that time that wouldn't. It goes without saying a lot of it had to do with his size, because players that big aren't meant to be running all over the floor defending. It's an unrealistic expectation of them, which is partly the reason all the criticism around Jokic's defense doesn't make sense, but that's an argument for another day.

That's what all the role players on the Lakers were for. They'd do all the dirty work and he'd just come down the other end of the floor and go to work.
