Philadelphia police chief defends officers in Starbucks arrests

By Kelly McCleary, CNN

Starbucks apologizes after two African-American men are arrested at one of its Philadelphia locations.
(CNN)Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross is defending the actions of officers seen in a viral video arresting two men at a Starbucks.

The video, which has racked up millions of views since it was posted to Twitter on Thursday, shows Philadelphia police officers arresting two African-American men inside a Starbucks location.

Melissa DePino, who posted the video, wrote, "The police were called because these men hadn't ordered anything. They were waiting for a friend to show up, who did as they were taken out in handcuffs for doing nothing."
In the video a man is seen telling an officer that he was meeting the two men there and asking what they did to warrant police being called.

Others off screen are heard saying, "They didn't do anything."

Ross said Saturday his officers "did absolutely nothing wrong."
Ross recorded a statement on Facebook Live in which he explains that Starbucks employees called 911 to report a trespassing complaint.
The employees told officers the two men wanted to use the restroom but were told the facilities are only for paying customers. The Starbucks employees then asked the men to leave, but they refused, Ross says.
Officers responded and asked the men three times to "politely to leave the location because they were being asked to leave by employees because they were trespassing." When the men again refused to leave, they were arrested "without incident," Ross says.

The men were taken to a police station and released when it became clear Starbucks didn't want to press charges.

"They did a service that they were called to do," Ross says of the officers. "And if you think about it logically, that if a business calls and they say that someone is here that I no longer wish to be in my business, (officers) now have a legal obligation to carry out their duties. And they did just that."

Ross, who is black, references his own experiences while making his case, saying, "As an African-American male, I am very aware of implicit bias."

"We are committed to fair and unbiased policing and anything less than that will not be tolerated in this department."

In statement posted on Twitter, Starbucks apologized "to the two individuals and our customers."

"We take these matters seriously and clearly have more work to do when it comes to how we handle incidents in our stores.," the statement reads.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said Starbucks' apology "is not enough."

He said he "asked the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations to examine the firm's polices and procedures, including the extent of, or need for, implicit bias training for its employees."
Kenney said he's "heartbroken to see Philadelphia in the headlines for an incident like that," which he says "appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018."

"Starbucks should be a place where everyone is treated the same, no matter the color of their skin," Kenney says.

All that could be done at a non cac place...or maybe the city you live in is majority white, if so, I don’t blame you...but I live in a 80+% black section of Miami...all the things I spent my extra money on are taken care of by blacks...
no. i don't live in a city that is majority white, but that's beside the point, look at how many great spots that were owned by blacks that were up and running so blacks can have a place to eat home cook meals, fast forward to today, food that being serve by us is watered down simply to get a quick buck

And these men could have gotten criminal records for nothing.....

Remember this story,
Black man punched by a white cop for no reason while waiting for a ride from the hospital

Again,
Yea.... discrimination against black men is one of the last hurdles America has to get over...... America has accepted trans people, homosexuals, #me-too and so on..... one group it seems to be against, and the data proves this, is black men.... t Hassan Johnson calls it race based misandry.... and it's all over the western world...... and the more this place atrophies economically, expect to see attacks against black men....

Breh some of us don’t seek cac acceptance  I know that’s a hard concept to grasp for you but, oh well :manny: no tears shed for c00ns...

Some cats will never see that path ever! I have seen you mention in this thread ways of pulling yourself up or your next generation up only to be shot down. It makes no sense to explain to cats that have zero imagination of the possibility of better future for yourself or your next generation. Some cats lack zero depth and zero imagination!

White people go and sit in Starbucks all the time without buying anything. This is why they are so confused and upset. White people may understand how they benefit from some of the larger aspects of white supremacy but this sort of stuff they can't wrap their minds around.
Military occupation is scary to all. Because it might be us first but they all know, it will soon be them.

I love that i am hated because i am black...If you dont have haters you dont have nothing

you sound soft as butter
You can't be Black. No one wants to be hated for no reason. That's like saying, I love not getting p*ssy if no one finds me attractive. That's said by no one. Obviously, being hated in a system of white supremacy is worse than not getting sex and the comparison is vague, still, this isn't a honest statement whatsoever. You are probably a cac.

Violence is the only thing these cacs understand. You really think a lawsuit hurts these corporate cacs? It's pennies to them cuz. I'm saying get at dude when nobody is around.

I suggest they do both. Light up the manager and sue :francis:

I don't know about them only understanding violence, they respect money and power and individually most of us have none:francis:

But you are right in many instances, they will take the L in a lawsuit because to them it helps their brand and money overall. They probably enjoy news of racism in Macys and Starbucks going viral. Why? Because it won't keep most cacs from shopping there, but hopefully it will keep black people from going, which is exactly what they want.

These cops are white supremacist soldiers like Tariq says,as blacks we need to see the bigger picture sometimes. It's not as simple as these cops don't like you because you are black. These cops are working under the will of the government and tax payers of certain areas. They don't wan't black people in certain areas and in certain establishments. What better way to keep you out then to harrass you? Every black person knows there are certain areas you will be harrassed by cops if you venture there. Sure youll be let go,probably not shot, but thats not the main goal. The goal is to harrass you,and hopefully youll spread the word to your black friends not to go and hang in that area or establisment.

This is about white flight, and the fact white people often stop going to places once the become our places too. We have to start thinking bigger about racism, when you see it like this it's just as offensive, but lets you know its bigger than isolated incidents,or just bad law enforcement training. You can never clean up the force of bad apples because there will always be boundary lines set up,and they will be told to enforce them.
