To be fair, Montana is not rural in the same way that Alabama is.

Rural Montana is mostly open and abundant wilderness (mountains, rivers, and open fields). Not too many people live in rural Montana and many who do are Native Americans (who vote overwhelmingly for Democrats).

Montana is also a heavily unionized state, which favors Democrats. Montana in addition has a lot of public lands that most Montanans want to be protected not destroyed.

There is also not the evangelical influence in Montana like a lot of other red states.

I know Montana's climate is more favorable to Dems than most of the Southern states (even though Republicans generally do very well there). Tester must have built a positive reputation for himself, plus he's pretty gun friendly.
