ALBANY —Gov. Cuomo faces more than just running with a candidate he doesn’t support if Jumaane Williams wins his upcoming Democratic lieutenant governor primary.
Under state law, gubernatorial and lieutenant governor candidates run separately in the primary but as a ticket in the general election.
Four years ago, Cuomo and Hochul received 131,564 combined votes on the Independence and Women’s Equality lines. They also received another 126,244 on the Working Families Line, which currently belongs to Nixon and Williams.
The votes were combined with the 1.8 million Cuomo and Hochul received on the Democratic line.
Hochul legally could only be removed from a line is if she dies, moves out of state, or runs for a judgeship.
Cuomo’s late father, Mario Cuomo, in 1982 has supported Carl McCall for lieutenant governor. But McCall lost in the Democratic primary to Alfred DelBello.
The Cuomo-DelBello ticket went on to win the genera election. But Cuomo as governor virtually ignored DelBello, who wound up quitting in 1985 after having little to do.
Some politicos believe New York should change the practice of a separate lieutenant governor primary and instead have governor and lieutenant governor candidates run as a ticket in the primary.
