The split was already tried. The powers that be will not allow for split to remain. Biafra declared independence which led to the Nigerian Civil War. Unfortunately, oil was found years before the civil war and the British (BP) and the Dutch (Shell) had a stake in the oil.
During the thick of the Cold War era, the British (US strongest ally) and the USSR, sworn enemies at the time provided military support to the remaining Nigeria. The ONLY war during the Cold War era in which the Soviets and West were on the same side. Egypt joined using the Soviet MIG fighter jets to bomb Biafra daily in the name of Jihad. The biggest enemies of the black race, the white man and the Arab man joined forces to ensure that Biafra would not remain. Some involved on the Nigerian side of the war did not understand the role they played for the western world. Its not until decades later and after all the suffering that Nigerians as a whole experience that they realized they were fighting to maintain the white man's control and status quo in their country.
The Nigeria situation is extremely complex. There are MANY tribes in Nigeria and they all have different relationship with one another. Its more difficult to put together than Rubik's cube. This makes building allies to make things work almost impossible. Some tribes that were allies before the war and no longer allies. Some that became allies during the war are no longer allies. Some tribes share land, some don't. Some tribes migrate heavily to other regions for work, some don't. Some are nomads. Some value education, some don't. Some tribes are entirely christian, some are entirely muslims. Some others are split between christian and muslim.
Muslims killing Christians will continue because the Western world has already showed them they don't care as long as they make their billions of dollars from oil. That is one of the lessons learned from the war. I have a feeling it will remain this way for a long time.
