YouTube celebrities KSI and Logan Paul had a pretty massive event in Aug. 2018, fighting as amateur boxers in Manchester, England, with the six-round bout being declared a majority draw, no one having to lose face.
The event sold a lot of $10 pay-per-views on YouTube, kicking up a ton of discussion online even if the fight wasn’t taken particularly seriously as a sporting event by anyone who’s over the age of 14.
Now the two are officially going professional, at least for one fight, at least for a rematch with one another on Nov. 9. Matchroom Boxing will be promoting the bout at Staples Center in Los Angeles, to stream live on
DAZN, which is certainly one way to get a nice one-month boost on subscriptions. If nothing else they’re going to have a big November.
The fight, which obviously will be the pro debut for both men, will be a four-round bout.
And yeah, we’ll cover it. I mean, it’s a pro boxing show. It’s promoted by a legitimate promoter. It’s on a major broadcast platform. Hopefully Big Ed will put some good fights on the card and make it worth tuning in for people who actually like boxing and not gimmicky business strategies.
One argument you’re likely to hear over and over is that this event can “grow the sport,” but that’s nonsense and everyone knows it. It’s a quick buck to make, fair enough, but it’s extremely unlikely that the vast majority of the audience that tunes in for this will be swayed into following boxing. But hey, maybe someone will, I guess.
