I believe that they would have had to renounce his bird rights in order to use all that cap room. If you could do it the way you suggested MIA coulda signed 3 other max players AND Wade in 2010.

I don't see the problem with Kobe takin 48mil. Just think about how much money he is generating for the Lakers by him bein on the team? Reportedly he generates over 70million per season for the Lakers, not to mention the seats that Kobe fills when the Lakers hit the road.
