Wilder-Ortiz: Nevada Commission Approves Judges, Referee
By Keith Idec

Published On Wed Nov 20, 2019, 02:54 PM EST

LAS VEGAS – The Nevada State Athletic Commission assigned one of boxing’s most respected referees Wednesday to officiate the Deontay Wilder-Luis Ortiz rematch.

The NASC approved executive director Bob Bennett’s recommendation for Nevada’s Kenny Bayless to be the third man in the ring Saturday night at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The NSAC also voted unanimously during its monthly meeting in Las Vegas in favor of Nevada residents Eric Cheek and Dave Moretti and New Jersey’s Steve Weisfeld judging the second bout between Wilder and Ortiz.

Only two of Wilder’s 42 professional fights have gone the distance. The first of those fights was Wilder’s unanimous-decision defeat of Bermane Stiverne, then the WBC heavyweight champion, in January 2015 at MGM Grand Garden Arena, the same venue where Wilder and Ortiz will square off for Wilder’s title.

The 34-year-old Wilder (41-0-1, 40 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, stopped Ortiz (31-1, 26 KOs, 2 NC), a native Cuban who resides in Miami, in the 10th round of their first fight. Ortiz has repeatedly stated that referee David Fields should’ve allowed him to continue after Wilder knocked him down for the third time in their March 2018 bout at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Their 12-round rematch is the featured attraction of FOX Sports’ four-fight, pay-per-view telecast (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT; $74.95 in HD).

Later Wednesday, the NSAC approved Nevada’s Tim Cheatham, Connecticut’s Glenn Feldman and New York’s Julie Lederman as the judges for the 12-round, 130-pound title bout between Leo Santa Cruz and Miguel Flores. Santa Cruz (36-1-1, 19 KOs), of Rosemead, California, and Houston’s Flores (24-2, 12 KOs) will fight for the WBA’s vacant “super” 130-pound championship in the undercard bout that’ll immediately precede Wilder-Ortiz.

The NSAC assigned Tony Weeks as the referee for the Santa Cruz-Flores fight as well.

Also Wednesday, the NSAC appointed Nevada residents Lisa Giampa and Glenn Trowbridge and Connecticut’s Don Trella as the judges for a 12-rounder between Brandon Figueroa (20-0, 15 KOs), of Weslaco, Texas, and Mexico’s Julio Ceja (32-4, 28 KOs). Jay Nady was assigned as the referee for their fight for Figueroa’s WBA super bantamweight title.

Lastly, the NSAC approved Russell Mora as the referee for the 12-round bantamweight battle that’ll match Mexico’s Luis Nery (30-0, 24 KOs) against Puerto Rico’s Emmanuel Rodriguez (19-1, 12 KOs). The NSAC also assigned California’s Max De Luca, Arizona’s Chris Flores and Nevada’s Ricardo Ocasio to judge the Nery-Rodriguez bout.

Wilder Declined DAZN's $100M Deal Because of Dishonesty

Deontay Wilder will be making his FOX pay-per-view debut Saturday against Luis Ortiz, but it almost never came to be.

In March, DAZN offered Wilder $100 million for a three-fight package, including two fights with Anthony Joshua.

The WBC heavyweight champion eventually declined the nascent OTT streaming platform’s payday, and went on to fight Dominic Breazeale on longtime broadcast partner Showtime, destroying Breazeale in one round.

“I didn’t take the DAZN deal because the people that were representing DAZN were coming with an offer that wasn’t up front and truthful with me,” Wilder told BoxingScene.com in an interview. “They came back and apologized to us. They knew they were in the wrong … The money is not going to be the motivator of everything. I bet on myself. I make way more money than what they’re offering anyway.

“They were not honest in the information that was going in the offers, and who’s getting what. I felt that they hesitated to give us a response. They didn’t want to reveal the information, and that was very important information that we needed to make a decision.”

When asked to elaborate, Wilder instead chose not to offer too much in response.

“It is what it is, and I’ll keep it like that,” he said.

In an interview last month with Lance Pugmire of The Athletic, DAZN executive chairman commented on the Wilder negotiations, saying: “In retrospect, I was too brash going in there without creating the relationships I needed to create with the people who advised Deontay Wilder. I have now worked to do that. It has to do with going back to the education I needed before getting into boxing … When we left that (Wilder) meeting, I knew we messed up and that we weren’t going to be successful.

“We were impatient, and after having some early success, we wanted to move quickly. Now I understand that I’ve got to work relationships, work within a framework and understand other peoples’ self-interests and needs as well … If I had to do it again, I’d have gone in and said, ‘I’m playing the long game.’ I’m playing the long game with Canelo and GGG, too.”

In hindsight, Wilder said he’s glad he passed up on the DAZN deal, because Joshua ended losing to PBC stablemate Andy Ruiz in June, and thus creating havoc and uncertainty in the heavyweight picture.

“Look how god works. If I signed that deal, I would have still been sitting around, waiting for Anthony Joshua, and the fight would not be as big as it was before he lost. We would have lost value,” said Wilder.

Wilder ducking though.:martin:

Boxers are different man some nikkas would rather die out there than deal with the humiliation after a loss, flight home w their families depressed and shyt after an L. :francis: Especially when you are dealing w top guys you gotta be a little bit off to reach that level.

I've been watching n around boxing my whole life and have NEVER heard anything close Wilder's power im surprised he hasn't killed anyone yet :picard:

What's wild is that Tyson had that many fights at 24. And would've had more if not for that jail shyt

As far as the Wilder thing goes, I'm glad boxing is getting that attention even if it's misguided.

that i can agree with breh :salute:..lord knows it needs more of it after canelo laid another dud for the boxing world and got outshined by ufc

maybe if Joshua understood footwork we wouldn't be building a wall where is equilibrium is currently located :picard:

maybe if ggg understood footwork he wouldn't be running around here calling Canelo daddy :picard:
