Canelo: We Picked Kovalev Because He's The Best at 175
By Boxing Clever

Published On Thu Oct 31, 2019, 12:22 AM EDT

Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs) is looking to make fireworks when he steps in the ring with Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (34-3-1, 29 KOs), as they collide for the Russian boxer's WBO light heavyweight title.

Canelo takes the big risk in moving up in weight, as he climbs up by two entire divisions to challenge Kovalev.

The contest takes place on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Canelo has never fought beyond the super middleweight division.

Last December, he moved up to 168-pounds and blew away Rocky Fielding in three rounds at Madison Square Garden in New York City. With the win, Canelo captured the WBA's "regular" title at the weight. Callum Smith is the "super" champion.

Canelo has captured world titles at junior middleweight and middleweight - and now he faces a much bigger and stronger man, at a weight division that is foreign.

Kovalev is closer to the end of his career, but still very much viewed as a dangerous puncher.

"I’m ready. I’m ready to make history. I’m ready for this great fight with Kovalev. We are ready to win,” Canelo said.

“[I selected Kovalev] because he’s the best in his division, he’s one of the best [in the sport], that’s why we chose him, to make history by fighting one of the best. I feel comfortable [at 175-pounds], I feel good, we’ll see on Saturday how it all goes but I feel good.”

SIZE DIFFERENCE GOT ME A LIL NERVOUS.:damn:

Imagine if the extra weight gasses Canelo quicker than usual... Mite be a WRAP.
Supposedly it’s supposed to help him cuz he’s not cutting weight?

He said he’s planning to be 180 and Kovalev to be 190 but I’ve seen a video of Kovalev saying he only hydrates like 2-3 kilos. That’s why I always found it funny about people saying about a hydration clause, it wouldn’t have mattered.

I seen that shyt earlier. It's the only shyt that makes sense. Cause goldenboy woulda never approved this shyt beforehand. Oscar definitely hoping canelo loses.
They didn’t want this fight, canelo wanted this fight and what canelo wants he gets.

Why are u guys blaming golden boy and Oscar?

Nobodys "blaming" goldenboy. Canelo wanted the fight. So whatever happens it's on him. Just saying goldenboy prolly woulda gave canelo a little more resistance if it wasn't for the ongoing beef. It looks like the canelo GBP split is only a formality at this point.

He's by far the most accomplished. And bivol or beterbiev still haven't proven to be elite. Bivol shoulda knocked Pascal out and beiterbiev stays getting tagged. Kovalev would be live vs either one of em. Especially early. They aren't exactly great defensive fighters. When kovalev catches em clean it could be a wrap. All them dudes at 175 are nothing more than good fighters to me. They're still some beasts, but as far as boxing skill they're nothing special at all :yeshrug:

accomplished and best are not mutually exclusive...175 is beterbiev's division...he dethroned the lineal champ and unified a belt...he is the world's best light heavyweight until further notice

Nah breh, I agree with Pat, Canelo is ballsy af for moving up to fight Kovalev and all but Beterbiev is the man at 175, not Kovalev.

I'm not saying kov is the best, just that he's still very capable of beating any of those guys. He may not have the youth on his side but he still has the superior boxing ability and lights out power. Kov shouldn't be considered the best but I think he's still a live dog against anybody there.

I agree that he's a live body w them, I'd pick Gvozdyk and Bivol to beat him at this point though and confidently Beterbiev but 175 is a deep, strong division and Kovalev would be still favored against anyone else in it

This is coming from someone who doesn't like Kovalev. Regardless of Beterbiev rising up as the current Man of the division, Kovalev is still one of the best at 175 and is least #2 at the weight with a belt ( Gvozdyk drops because of the loss and Bivol is still coming along ). Yeah Canelo is selling the fight lol but he doesn't need to explain in my opinion. I have to give credit to him, the risk/reward is high because of the size difference.

If Canelo has moved on from fighting GGG then so be it :sas1: no need to hate :lolbron:
