Chazz Witherspoon will get one last chance to make his mark in the heavyweight division.

BoxingScene.com has learned that Witherspoon has replaced Tyrone Spong as Oleksandr Usyk’s opponent for Usyk’s true heavyweight debut Saturday night in Chicago. The 38-year-old Witherspoon accepted what will be an extremely challenging fight on less than one week’s notice.

DAZN, which will stream Usyk-Witherspoon from DePaul University’s Wintrust Arena, and Matchroom Boxing, Usyk’s promoter, are expected to officially announce Witherspoon as Spong’s substitute sometime Tuesday.

Spong (14-0, 13 KOs), a former mixed martial arts fighter from Suriname, was removed from his scheduled 12-rounder against Usyk on Monday. Eddie Hearn, Matchroom’s managing director, revealed Monday that there was an adverse finding in one of Spong’s performance-enhancing drug tests administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association.

The 34-year-old Spong disputed that he failed a VADA test in an interview Monday with BoxingScene.com (Spong: This Is Manipulative Attempt To Remove Me From Usyk Fight). Nevertheless, a new opponent was found for the 32-year-old Usyk, whose first fight at heavyweight since May 2014 was postponed nearly five months due to a biceps injury.

Ukraine’s Usyk (16-0, 12 KOs), the former undisputed cruiserweight champion, was supposed face Cameroon’s Carlos Takam (37-5-1, 28 KOs) on May 25 at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Witherspoon (38-3, 29 KOs), a cousin of former WBA/WBC heavyweight champ Tim Witherspoon, hasn’t had what would be considered a meaningful fight in seven years. Seth Mitchell stopped him in the third round of that April 2012 bout at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Witherspoon, a Philadelphia native who resides in Paulsboro, New Jersey, is undefeated since Mitchell beat him. He has fought just eight times in the seven-plus years since suffering that loss, though.

Witherspoon’s previous two losses were a disqualification defeat to Chris Arreola in June 2008 and a ninth-round TKO loss to Tony Thompson in December 2009. In his last fight, Witherspoon stopped Santander Silgado (28-7, 22 KOs) after the second round March 23 in Atlantic City.

Usyk will fight for the first time since he stopped Tony Bellew (30-3-1, 20 KOs) in the eighth round last November 10 in Manchester, England.

Usyk Suffers Biceps Injury, Withdraws From Takam Bout

By Jake Donovan

Oleksandr Usyk’s long-awaited heavyweight debut will have to wait a little longer.

A torn biceps injury suffered by the reigning cruiserweight king and 2018 Fighter of the Year has disrupted plans for a scheduled clash with veteran contender Carlos Takam. The two were due to collide May 25 at MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md.

“Unfortunately, Usyk has suffered a bicep(s) injury and will no longer fight on May 25,” Egis Klimas, Usyk’s manager, confirmed on Tuesday. “A new date for his heavyweight debut will be announced shortly.”

Usyk’s foray into the heavyweight division was slated to serve as the centerpiece of a DAZN livestream on that date. Event handlers—including lead promoter Eddie Hearn—remain uncertain as to whether the show will still go on, although the hope is to keep the date and the balance of the undercard intact.

Fast-rising lightweight contender Devin Haney—whom recently signed a promotional contract with Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing USA outfit—is currently slated to face Mexico’s Antonio Moran in his DAZN debut. The unbeaten Las Vegas native is on course to eventually challenge for a lightweight title, as he was recently named in a four-man boxoff as ordered by the World Boxing Council, where he is currently the number-three contender.

Also on the show—and from a weight perspective, a reasonable alternative on short notice—is heavyweight Michael Hunter.

The once-beaten contender—whose lone loss came versus Usyk in this very venue in April 2017—is currently without an opponent for his slated undercard appearance. His placement on the May 25 show remained intact after he was removed from the short list of candidates to replace Jarrell Miller versus unbeaten, unified heavyweight titlist Anthony Joshua on June 1 in New York City.

Joshua will instead face Andy Ruiz on the date.

Usyk (16-0, 12KOs) is coming off of a 2018 campaign that saw him unify all of the major hardware in the cruiserweight division, thanks to back-to-back wins over previously unbeaten titlists Mairis Briedis and Murat Gassiev. Both fights came as part of the World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight tournament, with Usyk claiming top honors following a near-shutout of Gassiev in the finals last July.

The Ukrainian southpaw followed up the feat with an encore knockout win over Tony Bellew later that November. The bout took place in London, England, his first fight there since winning a Gold medal for his native Ukraine in the 2012 London Olympics.

Following the win over Bellew, Usyk teased that the bout would likely be his last at cruiserweight. He’s yet to completely sever ties with the division, other than giving up his WBA title earlier this year in lieu of a mandatory title defense versus Denis Lebedev.

The writing on the wall suggests he will abandon cruiserweight altogether, as plans call for a possible showdown with Joshua later this year assuming both win their next fights. Their going back-to-back in late May and early June would have served as the perfect primer.

For now, getting Usyk 100% healthy remains the primary objective, with everything else—including his eventual heavyweight debut—currently to be determined.

Oleksandr Usyk, Carlos Takam To Take Place Oct. 12 in Chicago

By Manouk Akopyan

Oleksandr Usyk will be making his much anticipated heavyweight debut this year after all.

The 2018 BWAA Fighter of the Year and unbeaten former undisputed cruiserweight champion will be moving up to heavyweight to fight Carlos Takam on Oct. 12 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, a source informed of the fight told BoxingScene.com. The matchup will be officially announced later this week.

Usyk suffered a torn right biceps injury in May just days before his originally scheduled May 25 affair with Takam (36-5-1, 28 knockouts) that led to a postponement of his first foray into the heavyweight division.

The May fight was to take place at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Md., but now, Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing have shifted strategy and cities over to Chicago. Usyk will be fighting in the Unites States for just the third time.

The heavyweight affair will be a very important one for Usyk (16-0, 12 knockouts), a gold medalist in the 2012 Olympics. The Ukrainian is a mandatory challenger for winner of the recently announced tilt between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Anthony Joshua.

Usyk had a banner year in 2018, blowing out the likes of Tony Bellew in England, Murat Gassiev in Russia and Mairis Briedis in Latvia. In the process, he collected three championships to make it a total of four and unified the division. He also took claim to The Ring magazine and lineal cruiserweight titles and was the victor of the inaugural World Boxing Super Series and Muhammad Ali Trophy.

The 38-year-old Takam has been in the ring with Anthony Joshua, Dereck Chisora, Joseph Parker and Alexander Povetkin (all losses) in recent years. His notable wins have come against Tony Thompson and Frans Botha.

What if Osyk loses? Does that kill his whole HW takeover narrative?

it will be a setback but not every good/great CW makes a good/great HW...there have been plenty of CW champs that didn't quite pan out at heavy

hell there are ppl here who werent sure usyk would pan out at CW prior to the WBSS

thats why im not on the wave with usyk taking over HW..he needs to have some definitive wins at HW and show a level
