It's like you're a champion but not really a champion but have to fight for a title that you already have but not really have...

What is an interim title match

UFC type sh-t. When a champ is out they have a fight for an interim title which sets up a match down the road between the two. it's so they don't have to strip the champ.

What is an interim title match

In boxing adn MMA an interim champion is the belt holder when the legit champion is injured or unable to defend the belt for any other reason beyond his control.
The interim champ then defends the title while the legit champ is out.
Once the legit champ can come back, he and the interim champ have a unification bout to decide the one true champion but if the legit champ cannot return for that match he gets stripped of his title and the interim champ becomes the official champ.
