The Friends cast had to negotiate that as a team. In the beginning, they weren't making anywhere near that much. David Schwimmer convinced them all that they had to negotiate to get the same amount because in his mind, they were all the stars. At one point, the show was in danger of not getting renewed and NBC even threatened to fire half the cast. Had they not closed a deal at the last minute, the sixth season would have been the last one. They didn't make a million per episode until the last two seasons.
Years later, the Modern Family cast was having problems negotiating new deals and Matt LeBlanc told them the only way the network will take them seriously is if they negotiate as a team. I think the Big Bang Theory stars took a pay cut so the other cast members could make an amount similar to theirs.
These networks don't want to pay that money. The only way to make them do it is apply pressure. You never know if you'll be on another hit show, and you're usually not set for life from TV unless you're Cosby or Seinfeld.
