Tell you what, didn't agree with everything he did , but David Stern knew how to protect the brand. And sometimes his actions protected players from themselves. He never took for granted that the NBA would remain popular.

Like him or hate him. Stern even protected players from the media. I remember two incidents where Stern called out the media to their faces. He personally called out ESPN when they did a bull shyt poll asking would the Celtics make the playoffs if Garnett blew his knee out, can't remember if it was his first or third season with the Celtics (I believe it was his 3rd season since he hurt his knee the season before stopping the Celtics change at a repeat) and Stern lit into ESPN and made them pull the poll down.

The second incident was I believe the 2012 Finals when Miami beat the Thunder. I believe it was Mike "me no black" Tirico going on the whole narrative that Lebron was the most horrible athlete of all time due to the decision (which a lot of white mainstream sites, radio stations and cable channels were pushing back then) and live on air Stern looked at him called him out and basically said lets not forget ESPN came to Lebron with the idea of the decision and then walked away when it blew up in everyone's face acting like they were innocent.

The league has really weak leadership right now. It's insane how long they let this fester without stepping in. Definitely would not have gone on this long with Stern in charge.

I’ll tell you a lil story/secret. A lot of people haven’t connected the dots but the UGA football team was regularly drag racing. It was an open secret. One of them got caught up on January 10. Police saw he was a football breh and let him go.

5 days later that same breh was racing and 2 people died
