I think there's a part of him that knows he's scared of the competition tbh. I think dude is trying to hide some serious imposter syndrome.

It's easy when there were no expectations but now the focus is on them to come through under his leadership and it's easier for them to say they came up short because of "other" reasons than saying they tried their best and it wasn't good enough.

When you've basically been better than everybody at every level and run into people who are better, that tends to expose fragile egos.
