His role in Star 80 is my favorite performance of all time. He plays one of the most disgusting sleazebags to have ever set foot in Hollywood (Paul Snider, read up on him) with such conviction and dedication it's mind blowing. The movie's a bit like Taxi Driver except Travis Bickle is at least a cinematic character with some likeability/intrigue, whereas Paul Snider is just pure filth.

His second greatest role is in Runaway Train where he plays a simpleton idealistic convict who escapes with a bitter, gritty convict (Jon Voight) who get stuck on a runaway train. Both actors got Oscar nominations for this now largely forgotten classic.

Well damn I will look these up...the Eric Roberts I remember is from Best of the Best I & II and a few other made for tv movies...didn't know he had some powerful stuff like this. props

Best Of The Best was the last good thing he did before his descent into DTV movies. But if you add The Pope Of Greenwich Village to the two movies I mentioned above, you got the tricepta of his greatest performances.

Yea De Niro barely missed the cut for me, but he has taken waaaaaaaaay too many cash grab shytty flicks in the past 20 years, so his stock has fallen somewhat. Marlon Brando did the same thing after Apocalypse Now
