Caleb Truax: I Have To Make It A Dogfight With Plant, Make Him Uncomfortable
By Keith Idec

Published On Thu Jan 28, 2021, 08:31 PM EST

Caleb Truax won’t attempt to out-box Caleb Plant on Saturday night.

The former IBF super middleweight champion respects Plant’s jab, intelligence, athleticism and ring generalship enough to know that wouldn’t be a smart strategy in their 12-round, 168-pound title fight in Los Angeles. The 37-year-old Truax must get in Plant’s chest and make their fight physical to have a legitimate chance to pull off another upset, similar to how he defeated England’s James DeGale by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder three years ago in London.

“He’s a good boxer,” Truax told BoxingScene.com. “He’s got a high ring IQ. He’s got good foot speed and hand speed, and throws some pretty fluid combinations. It’s gonna take a really good effort, my best effort, to beat him. I see it kind of similar to the first fight with DeGale, where I kinda have to bring the fight to him and put pressure on him and make him uncomfortable because when he gets off to a lead and stays behind his jab and keeps his distance, he’ll be tough to beat.”

Truax (31-4-2, 19 KOs, 1 NC), of St. Michael, Minnesota, has been critical of Plant’s level of opposition since he beat Jose Uzcategui to win the IBF belt in January 2019 at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The 28-year-old Plant (20-0, 12 KOs), who is consistently listed as at least a 45-1 favorite, has stopped previously unbeaten Mike Lee in the third round and mandatory challenger Vincent Feigenbutz in the 10th round since he unseated Uzcategui in their 12-rounder.

Truax noticed things during the second half of the Plant-Uzcategui bout that he can apply against Plaint in the main event of FOX’s tripleheader from Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall.

“He has never fought anybody like me, outside of Jose Uzcategui, who fought like sh-t the first half of the fight,” Truax said. “And then, the second half of the fight, he had some good success against him. I think I offer something no one else he has fought does, in terms of experience and technique and skill and determination. So, I’m gonna have to make it a dogfight, make him uncomfortable and hopefully that makes for a good fight for the fans.”

FOX’s telecast is set to start at 8 p.m. EST and 5 p.m. PST.

Before Plant-Truax, FOX will air an eight-round middleweight match in which Joey Spencer (11-0, 8 KOs), of Union City, California, will face Isiah Seldon (14-3-1, 5 KOs), of Somers Point, New Jersey. Philadelphia’s Darmani Rock (17-0, 12 KOs) and Brooklyn’s Michael Coffie (11-0, 8 KOs) also will square off in a televised 10-round heavyweight bout.

Caleb Plant-Caleb Truax Weigh-In Results From Los Angeles
By Keith Idec

Published On Fri Jan 29, 2021, 04:47 PM EST

The day of this weigh-in went much smoother for Caleb Truax than the last time he was supposed to step on a California State Athletic Commission scale.

Truax met his contractual obligation without incident Friday for his 168-pound title fight Saturday night against IBF champ Caleb Plant. Truax officially weighed 167.8 pounds for their 12-round bout, slightly more than Plant, who came in at 167.6.

The 28-year-old Plant (20-0, 12 KOs), of Ashland City, Tennessee, is regularly listed as at least a 45-1 favorite to defeat Truax in the main event of a FOX tripleheader at Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles (see below).

The 37-year-old Truax (31-4-2, 19 KOs, 1 NC) is ranked third by the IBF, but he has been declared its mandatory challenger for Plant’s super middleweight title. The top two spots in the IBF’s 168-pound ratings are unoccupied.

Truax, of St. Michael, Minnesota, was supposed to face Alfredo Angulo in an IBF elimination match August 29 at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The former IBF super middleweight champion withdrew the day of their weigh-in due to a brief illness that left Truax too weak to fight.

Mexico’s Angulo surprisingly lost a 10-round unanimous decision to Truax’s late replacement, Vladimir Hernandez. Denver’s Hernandez (12-4, 6 KOs) beat Angulo (26-8, 21 KOs) by the same margin on all three scorecards, 98-92.

The official weights for the Plant-Truax undercard fights are listed below.

FOX (8 p.m. EST; 5 p.m. PST)

Darmani Rock (17-0, 12 KOs), Philadelphia, 261 pounds vs. Michael Coffie (11-0, 8 KOs), Brooklyn, 270.2 pounds, 10 rounds, heavyweights.

Joey Spencer (11-0, 8 KOs), Union City, California, 158 pounds vs. Isiah Seldon (14-3-1, 5 KOs), Somers Point, New Jersey, 156.6 pounds, 8 rounds, middleweights.

FS1 (6 p.m. EST; 3 p.m. PST)

Rances Barthelemy (27-1-1, 14 KOs, 1 NC), Havana, Cuba, 142.8 pounds vs. All Rivera (21-4, 18 KOs), Santa Rosa City, Philippines, 143.2 pounds, 10 rounds, welterweights.

Brandyn Lynch (10-1, 8 KOs, 2 NC), Los Angeles, 158.2 pounds vs. Mark Anthony Hernandez (14-4-1, 3 KOs), Fresno, California, 160 pounds, 8 rounds, middleweights.

Atif Oberlton (pro debut), Philadelphia, 177.4 pounds vs. Nathan Davis Sharp (4-2, 4 KOs), Merced, California, 177.6 pounds, 4 rounds, cruiserweights.
