Europe's fiscal crisis has forced young people like Melissa Abadía to make painful adjustments and migrate to find jobs.

MADRID — Alba Méndez, a 24-year-old with a master’s degree in sociology, sprang out of bed nervously one recent morning, carefully put on makeup and styled her hair. Her thin hands trembled as she clutched her résumé on her way out of the tiny room where a friend allows her to stay rent free.

I just came back from Europe again. That struggle is real. Great for American travelers though :takedat:

Doesn't it depend on the kind of degree though?:ld: Too many kids are graduating with Art degrees. The market is just not big enough

:manny: I guess...I'm still an avid believer of people should go to study whatever interest them....

That STEM life aint for everyone :whew:

But it seems like there should be some sort employment relief for the countless number of psychology and sociology majors...

got a call for three nines
Very tragic, I was reading this a few nights ago. One thing I'm certain of is that austarity will not solve Europes woes.

To the poster above we arent talking about art degrees thats an incredibly ignorant and thoughtless thing to say.

which country did you visit?

I took a week trip to spend time in Spanish and French cities I didn't get to see this last summer I was there. Andalusia and North/Basque parts of Spain which I did in 3 and half days - I was in Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona in the summer. And then 4 days in France - Bordeaux, Toulouse, Paris visiting peeps and the like. I was in Narbonne, Montpollier, Marsellie, Nice and St. Tropez this past summer.

I was in Switzerland and Italy last summer as well. Fukk Italy though. Sad third world country. It's going to take a lot for me to step foot in that country again. Food wasn't even that great. And Zurich is the only place worth visiting in Switzerland imo.

I haven't looked at the numbers but I met a Spanish hotel worker in Ibiza with a Civil Engineering degree. Couldn't find any work.

People switching STEM majors is not a long time solution. It would mean there would be an increase in the supply of STEM applicants and a decrease in pay or even in employment. This is the end result of fukked up financial management policies and even more fukked up austerity measures placed upon these countries by their northern neighbors.

True, a person should be free to study what they want, but they should also accept the consequences of choosing a career path with little to no long term economic promise.

But it seems like there should be some sort employment relief for the countless number of psychology and sociology majors...
They should take responsibility for their career choice.

STEM majors will be the new Lawyer problem we had in the 90s.
