A few episodes in, it's so expertly put together, with the timeliness and cultural reference, it's really impressive. As someone who loves LA, and traffics in many of what they skewer, (green juice, Cafe Gratitude, all the foodie stuff) and has friends in LA who fit into many of the satirical characters on the show, including a girl named Delilah, who was a hostess at a trendy spot on Sunset.
My friends who are directors/actors/writers/editors/podcasters, and hate the LA power structure, but live under and in it. I've been out in Malibu at Malibu Country Kitchen, Nobu, Soho House, it's all so LA and so dope, but so absurd at times.
The character of 40 is hilarious, and I'm also in recovery,(13 years, and not really an AA follower at all, but have been to meetings) and know people like him, met people in AA meetings on Hawaiian beaches, who are so wealthy and privileged, it is sickening. The way he says Old Sport, (Great Gatsby reference) and mangles literary and cinematic references, with the air of a VIP host is so right on.
The twists and plot lines are preposterous, it goes without saying, and the show has always worked better as a satire than a thriller. Though the acting, casting, wardrobe is impressive and certainly West Hollywood has it's skeletons (Ed Buck, for one) using the rape and drugging, and sexual assault, of minors, for a cheap thriller plot, never feels right to me.
Highly enjoyable show. The plot developments are just window dressing, and I would much rather just see all the thriller elements almost entirely drained. Should do a Season 3 in San Francisco, and just wrap the series. Have a perfect 3 city/culture satire, and move on.
