Most classes you could seriously go without the book if you're smart enough to memorize the entire lecture. Most of the shyt the Professor teaches isn't actually going to be on any exams. Books are way too expensive,b. Usually costing more than class.

i have more difficulty actually bothering with a downloaded book than I do actually buying the book so that's never worked

Lecture notes, and doing your homework in the library. Taking out the previous editions. This will force you to study the material because you will either be limited by a due date or the book has to be returned in 2 hours.
