I think I read somewhere not even the creator knows why he was so popular. I think we naturally identify with the underdog and Vegeta was just that. He never got to become the strongest, it would always be Goku, and at some points Gohan or Gotenks. But dude trained hard as fukk to get there. When Vegeta got to training it was like

Vegeta was always so intense and I dont know who wasnt like when he finally became a super saiyan. nikka was pure heart and willpower breh. Everyone had the "Get strong to protect the earth" attitude my man was like "No I'm gettin stronger for me, I wont be humiliated anymore." He did end up caring for earth and the combination made him even more likeable.

Last time I checked, nobody really fukked with Vegeta at the end since sonned them all at one point since his arrival to Earth. None of the Z Fighters forgot what Vegeta did to them early in the show.

Goku's only letting Vegeta stick around because he's a fellow Saiyan and strong sparring partner. The rest of the fighters only tolerate him because he has built a family with Burma.
