Raymond Williams. Most of you probably haven't heard of him, so I'm going to give the whole story. This is long.
A few years ago this dude was a high school legend in Cleveland, and he is the reason I first got interested in playing football. Dude had the speed, the power, the vision, everything. So many people in the city had high hopes for him and schools like OSU and Nebraska were after him... until it was reported that his teachers were passing him along in some classes and his GPA was terrible.
It wasn't the end of the world though, since West Virginia and a few other schools were still looking at him. Then everything went to shyt. He commits a few armed robberies with two teammates, using toy guns, and they end up trying to rob a guy who had a real gun. This guy killed one of the kids in self-defense but Williams and the third teammate are charged with crimes. They plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter, but Williams got lucky because the judge put him on probation. He was also ordered to attend college and maintain a decent GPA. Sounds like a second chance. It gets worse.
He tried to walk-on at Toledo, but he couldn't qualify academically (Toledo is basically an open-enrollment school, meaning the undergraduate academics are far from challenging). Then he got caught stealing from the campus bookstore and driving under the influence. I think he only served about 2 weeks jail time total for all of this, and I'm not sure how that's possible.
Last I heard he was playing football at Shaw University in North Carolina. That was a few years ago though. I even found his highlight video from Shaw on YouTube.
He was the truth.
