You ever considered the fact that NOBODY knows why we're here?

I would say it's our purpose and sole principle to ensure the continuation of human evolution. As they say, the show must go on. Humans, as flawed and lost as we are in our current state, will continue to fall down painfully, and in turn we learn to pick ourselves up and press forward. We strive for a future where our falls are much less frequent and our strides are much longer. As we have spread from continent to continent, so shall we with the planets and stars. I think we weren't meant to stay on this 1 tiny rock for eternity... but we still have a long bumpy road ahead.

Like the Hulkster stated, trying to define an end goal is a distraction from our progress, I would say the reward itself lies within the journey. All we can hope for is that we "don't snuff ourselves out in an instant of unforgivable neglect", as carl sagan put so eloquently, because that my friends is a scary possibility.

I just go with the idea that there is no higher, telelogical purpose to be fulfilled by man and that man will never be able to reach the origins of the species. Thus, I can live as freely and fully as possible, freed from such ideological presuppositions.

Beyond that, I don't think there is much of a point in pondering this. I deal in the material relations of everyday life and how they come to be. Anything not dealing in those material conditions is something that I just don't really see as too relevant to human lives.

so basically ur lazy

Personally, I see no reason to separate the how from the why. They're one in the same, it's cause & effect: Ancient stars resisted the very gravity which fueled them. In this struggle elements were forged in the cores of these old suns, and throughout their lives, but especially in their deaths, these elements were ejected out into the vacuum of space. Over time these elements coalesced at the behest of gravity in to an average "yellow-dwarf" star along with residual entities such as planets, moons, asteroids, comets, dwarf-planets etc.. One of these bodies happened to be at a distance from it's star where a bio-chemical reaction could occur allowing certain molecules to self replicate. In this, inevitably, there was variation and with that competition. Over billions of years organisms in possession of traits that worked, traits that allowed them to survive, thrive, & improve in their environment continued to copy & pass along only the successful attributes until the Universe became astutely aware of itself, created a specific form of expression, and asked the question "Why?".

WE'RE HERE BECAUSE WE EVOLVED AS RELATIVELY INTELLIGENT, GROUP-DEPENDENT, CARBON-BASED LIFEFORMS ON THIS PLANET, BROTHER! THAT'S WHY WE ARE HERE! THAT IS THE CAUSE OF OUR BEING HERE, DUUUUDE!

BUT OFTEN WHEN PEOPLE PONDER THIS QUESTION, BROTHER, THEY'RE PRESUPPOSING THAT WE MUST BE HERE FOR A FUTURE PURPOSE, MAN! LIKE WINNING THE WWF CHAMPIONSHIP, BROTHER!

WHY SHOULD WE MAKE THAT PRESUPPOSITION, MAN? HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE TO BE HERE FOR SOME END GOAL, BROTHER? IF YOUR ANSWER IS SIMPLY THAT YOU'RE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THE IDEA THAT WE'RE NOT HERE FOR A FUTURE PURPOSE, THEN YOU ADMIT YOUR REASONING IS BASED SIMPLY ON YOUR DESIRES, BROTHER! THAT'S NOT HARMFUL IN ITSELF, BUT IT'S NOT A SOUND PHILOSOPHY, MY MAN!

This is the answer.. Close thread :stylin:

That's not WHY we're here...that's HOW we're here.

We have to be here not for some end goal, so to speak...but for a REASON, and that is infallible.

Answer being "simply" not being comfortable with the idea not having an idea? That reasoning is not based on simple desires. That's predisposition. Why do we have this predisposition? To crave to ask WHY? Why did we evolve enough to the point to ask why?

I mean...you're simply not looking deeply enough for answers. Arrogant even, to just simply brush it off as simple human desires.

WHY IS THAT INFALLIBLE, BROTHER?

Why did we evolve enough to the point to ask why?
THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE WHO DON'T SPEND ANY APPRECIABLE AMOUNT OF TIME THINKING ABOUT THOSE KINDS OF QUESTIONS, BROTHER! THE EVOLUTION OF SEVEN BILLION PEOPLE IS NOT PERFECTLY UNIFORM, DUUDE! STILL, YOU'RE PRESUPPOSING A SUPERSTITIOUS NECESSITY!

MY APOLOGIES, BROTHER! BUT IT'S HARD TO BE HUMBLE WHEN YOU'VE GOT THE BIGGEST ARMS IN THE WORLD AND THE WWF CHAMPIONSHIP!

If you equate the 'How' with the 'Why' then you must admit that you don't know why we're here since you can only know why if you know EXACTLY every single step down to the smallest detail of how everything in the universe works which is obviously unknowable for a single human being, or indeed any being that is a part of this world..It doesn't matter if you understand the big outline as long as there is a single step you can't reproduce then you can't understand the 'how and therefore you can't understand the why..

The best scientists will admit that they don't know exactly why we're here.

But ignorance is bliss brother, no need to feign being 100% knowledgeable on everything.

We're all in the same boat. We are :hamster: in the grand scheme of things.. :noah::yeshrug:

CAN YOU EXPAND ON THIS, BROTHER? HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS?

The best scientists will admit that they don't know exactly why we're here.

BUT RELIGIOUS LEADERS WILL CLAIM THEY DO KNOW EXACTLY WHY WE'RE HERE AND THEN THEY'LL BEG YOU FOR MONEY, BROTHER!

It follows logically. Say our goal is to build a spaceship that can fly to Jupiter. If the religious team of engineers makes a paper airplane and then starts praying that it turns into a spaceship, claiming that it is the only way to create an operating spaceship, we laugh at them. But we don't prove that they're wrong by building a gigantic structure that looks just like any NASA spaceship and has most of its electrical equipment in place but it's not quite complete yet. It may start to look like something that may function as an actual spaceship but until we actually get it to work we can't claim that we know how to build a spaceship.
I guess my point is that if we analogize to the matter of knowing why we are here exactly as we are, we will never be able to finish building the 'spaceship' (which would be an analogy for the complete explanation of why we are/how we came to be here).

BUT RELIGIOUS LEADERS WILL CLAIM THEY DO KNOW EXACTLY WHY WE'RE HERE AND THEN THEY'LL BEG YOU FOR MONEY, BROTHER!

Agreed. But seeing through their mistakes doesn't allow us to make the same ones.

Claiming we know why we're here on the basis of modern day scientific understanding is claiming enlightenment, just as religious authorities do.
Afterall, if we already know why we are here then what would be the merit of future scientific knowledge? Would it not add to our understanding of the world we live in?

It's infallible because everything happens for a reason. I want you to think of an instance when something didn't happen for a reason. There cannot be an effect without a cause.

But religion is seen in every culture and that is there way in asking why. Finding more to their existence than simply day in day out.
